I just bought the Winter EP by Jon Foreman, the frontman of the band Switchfoot. I like Switchfoot but I’ve thought that they’ve kinda wandered from the roots of their first couple of CDs. This EP by Jon Foreman reminds me of the deep, thoughtful lyrics I remember on Learning To Breathe and Beautiful Letdown although musically it’s completely different. I actually like Jon better on these EPs than on some of his Switchfoot stuff.

I especially love the track “Learning How To Die.” Here’s an excerpt from the lyrics:

She said, “I love you.
I’m gonna miss hearing your songs.”
And I said, “Please,
Don’t talk about the end
Don’t talk about how every living thing
Goes away…”

She said, “friend, all along -
thought I was learning how to take
how to bend not how to break
how to live not how to cry
but really
I’ve been learning how to die
