Woopra Blog Analytics Tool
Post Category: Blog Posts

This post is for all my fellow-bloggers out there. A couple of months ago I heard about a free new Web site analytics tool called Woopra on GeekBrief.tv. I watched the video demo of it and was very impressed with its capabilities. The only problem was that it was still in beta testing. I signed up to be notified when the application became available.
Last week I got an email notifying me that my account had been activated so I immediately downloaded the desktop client (Mac users will need to download the latest Java Virtual Machine beta).
I became instantly hooked. What sets this web analytics tool apart from other web tracking tools (like my previous favorite, Google Analytics) is that it allows you to view live hits to your web site in real time. That means that I can have my Woopra client open and view visitors to my site and view their page-by-page browsing history.
There are lots of other great features (like visitor tagging and click-to-chat) that will allow you to get to know your site visitors better.
Woopra is a free download so check it out. Sign up at www.woopra.com and let me know what you think.

It can also freak out your readers when a Big Brother-type chat window appears in the bottom corner of their screen…hypothetically…

Wow! This is putting Google Analytics to shame! I’ll have to wait until someone comes out with a Joomla plug-in. I’ve had a terrible time doing manual installs for stat tracking thus far…

Clayton, I have no idea what you’re talking about.
Yeah, I agree though. While that may not have practical (or comfortable) applications for blog owners it can possibly be helpful for business web site owners. I haven’t seen any market research yet for how users respond to that. It would be interesting to find out.
Brook - It’s not a hard install at all. It’s just few lines of code you paste into the footer of you blog. The plugin for Wordpress just ads extra functionality for tracking. You don’t even need it to use it. Try it out.

Clayton - i have the chat window on my blog…occasionally i see someone there and pop them a note.
Brad - how’s the slow down on you site? any?
Brad, are you a stat slut? Your code looks like you’re running three trackers.

I actually won a free invite for Woopra from a live show Cali was doing for Geek Brief. But I haven’t been able to get Java 6 installed on my mac. Any suggestions?

Yeah, it won’t work on my mac. The new Java beta is only for 64 bit Macs. Mine isn’t.
bummer.

For those of you having issues installing Woopra for Mac, here is what I had to do.
I installed the Java 6 Developer Kit but had problems installing the Woopra application. It still said my version of Java wasn’t current.
I found a fix by going to COMPUTER > APPLICATIONS > UTILITIES > JAVA > JAVA PREFERENCES.APP
Under the General tab I changed my Java Application Runtime Settings so that Java SE 6 was at the top and clicked Save. After that it worked fine.

Dude thanks so much for the help…it ended up working after I downloaded the new Java that came out a few days ago (I think) and changed the settings. YOU ROCK!!!

Too many bugs…administrators not responsive. Could have been great.
