I always like to learn new things about my readers, but first something you may not know about me. Did you know, I’ve been on the Internet long enough to remember connecting onto Compuserve through a 28.8k modem? Downloading 35k .wav clips, listening to MIDI files and downloading “high res” jpeg images at 800×600! Ahh, those were the days.

I know this is total blog/web/computer geek curiosity but I’m just wondering, what kind of Internet connection do you have now?

Cable?
DSL?
Dial-Up?

Indulge my geeky curiosity.

Gotta love wifi! Dial-up… now those were the days. I can remember when I got my first email address from hotmail. My mom told me email was such a fad, that the internet wouldn’t catch on, haha! I first accessed the internet in college in a computer lab, it was so slow; I can remember waiting literally 2-3 minutes for a page to load… man we’ve come a long ways!

I’ve got naked DSL through ATT, connecting currently at about 1.6 (although I’m trying to get the ‘cap’ taken off my line to allow faster speeds!)

We have cable at home and one of those nifty little Verizon broadband cards for the road.

I actually connected to local bulletin boards with a 4800 baud modem back in the late 80’s. Boy, that was fun!

  14. Brad Ruggles on June 30th, 2008 11:35 am

@JaySellers - Whoa! You’re even more old school than me! Now THAT was some quality Internet

  15. Angie Washington on June 30th, 2008 11:47 am

We have the fastest you can get here in Cochabamba, Bolivia: Wireless and broadband. I don’t know all the technical numbers and terms, all I know is that it is the best available.

Just so you know. I remember dialing into bulletin boards from the only computer with a modem at our school.

@Brandi - Wow, thanks! I have Google Analytics but I never knew it tracked that! According to my analytics it says that 36% have cable, 30% have DSL and only 2.4% have dialup. Man, I feel bad for that poor 2.4%

I have a Comcast cable connection with speed boost it would make me cry if I had to use dial up again.

I am 90% of the time using public WiFi. At home (the other 10%) I am on Cox Cable connection with a wireless router. (my PS3 also uses this connection)

I have nightmares about the 56k dialup days and frankly I would rather not talk about the past.

I use a radio DSL connection. Living in the middle of no where (20 miles from the nearest towns) DSL is hard to come by. But, you can get about anything if you are willing to pay for it. I pull a radio signal from a telephone/cable tv provider some 17 miles away. Service is sometimes intermittent…like when a cloud strolls by…but when it works, it works great!

Y’all are newbies to the Internet. I spent my first couple of years online connecting at 2400 baud to local BBSes. (Heck, I even ran my own for awhile, but didn’t have a separate phone line for it… so it wasn’t up very often). I was thrilled when I got to step up to speeds like 4800, or 14.4 or 28.8 and 56k. And my first “browsing the Internet” experiences were with Gopher (a text based EARLY version of the WWW) and then Netscape 2.x, which crashed about every 15 minutes.

Now? 15 up/2 down Fiber, and looking to see if I can get the rumored free upgrade to 20/5!
