Help Me Build My Workout Music Playlist

POSTED IN: Blog Posts

As you know I’ve been biking quite a bit over the last month. I’m a music guy so I love having something to listen to when I’m working or doing stuff so I just bought a little 1Gb iPod shuffle to clip on while I’m biking.

What songs would you add to my high-energy, workout playlist?

These have got to be songs that are going to give me that extra boost while I’m struggling up that long hill. They’ve got help me dig deep for that last bit of energy at the end of a long ride. I’m talking some reall kick-a$$ songs here. I’ll share the finished iTunes playlist with everyone once it’s done.

What songs would you add to my workout playlist?

Just about anything by the All-American Rejects, but more specifically the song Move Along
Dead Man (Carry Me) -JarsofClay (This is a great last song of a workout…)

Simply have to have the entire Mute Math album in there. Family Force 5 are cheesy, but they’re fun in circumstances such as these. Jimmy Eat Worlds Bleed American and Chase This Light. Amazing!

Love the Mute Math pick. When I run (which isn’t often) I listen to selected songs from Bloc Party, Muse, The Presets, Kings X, and anything electronic. I don’t know why, but electronic music is great for running.

My sleeper pick, the ENTIRE Linkin Park / Jay-Z “Collision Course” project. That album makes my adrenal glands work in overdrive.

But hey, You asked!! LOL

Some how… I just drew a blank when I was going to tell you what was on my running mix. Quick solution: Pull my iPod out and look. What happened as I was unraveling my headphones: I didn’t realize my own strength, and flung one of the earphones STRAIGHT into my coffee cup. TRUE story… and apparently, my battery is dead, so I’ll get back to you on this one… I know for sure there’s some G1C and Timbaland…

You know, I’m a fan of Flyleaf. Particularly these songs:
    so sick
    All Around Me
    Fully Alive
    Sorrow
There For You (this one is slower)

    The Afters:
    Beautiful Love

    Copeland:
    No One Really Wins

    Dave Barnes:
    Until You

    David Gray:
    Please Forgive Me
    Babylon

    Foo Fighters:
    My Hero
    Next Year
    Monkey Wrench

    Guster:
    Careful

    Further Seems Forever
Basically anything from the album “Hide Nothing”, or “how to start a fire”

I second the suggestion of The Afters. Couple of great tunes off their new one:
    Never Going Back to OK
    Myspace Girl

Can’t believe no one has brought up Switchfoot yet!
    Stars
    Oh! Gravity
    American Dream
Awakening (starts a little slow, but WOW, for an early morning ride this would be amazing)

There’s a very funny song by a band called This Train called Monstertruck (if it’s not on iTunes I can send it to you).

For a little something different (namely flamenco), get Mario Takes a Walk by Jesse Cook.

KT Tunstall – Suddenly I See
The Kinks – What I Like About You

Again, if you can find it on iTunes, Breathing Life by Salvador.

    I have lots more if that’s not enough… =)

But some days ya just gotta hold up the Bic lighter and listen to Whitesnake.

Don’t laugh but some of the tunes off of August Rush are great if you are riding up mountains.

That’s probably my favorite running song.

Another favorite on my running playlist is andrea Bocelli. Sounds random, but sometimes fast music messes with my running rhythm. Besides, while I’m listening to Andrea Bocelli it’s easier to imagine I’m running through the Italian countryside – instead of the hills of Waco…

I don’t know if someone has said this yet, but you have to have “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky. Maybe have just a special playlist just for it so you can use it in the really tough parts of your rides. Unfortunately I think some sports consider the song an illegal substance.

Ok, gotta say this first, isn’t it a tad dangerous to have buds blaring music in your ears while you pedal down the road along side high speed traffic? Just had to let the dad side of me speak, :-)

Now that I got that out, here’s a song that I think would be great for a long straight away into some huge hill climb: The 7 minute 55 second epic Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie. I know it starts out pretty mellow but I think it would be great to listen to as it builds up to that amazing crescendo at the end. The strong beat playing on the drums and the words “so come oooooonnnn, come oooooooooooooonnn” echoing in your noggin! Good stuff.
