I Thought This Couldn’t Possibly Be Real

Someone emailed me this video last night. When I first watched it I thought, there is no way that could possibly be real (video below).

I started Googling to read more and came across this piece that the Today show did about it. It turns out this technique has been used to train over 160,000 infants (some as young as 6 months) how to save themselves from drowning (video below).

It amazes me what young children are capable of. So often we judge where a child is developmentally based on their verbal skills but, as you can see from the above videos, infants and toddlers are capable of doing some pretty amazing things long before they can talk.

If you have a young child and want to learn more about this training resource visit www.infantswim.com.

Have you heard of this before? Would you send your child to these classes?

Ya know, the fact that a baby can swim better than I can is a little depressing…

I have friends in CA who did this program with their kids. I think it’s excellent, especially if you have a pool or are near water very often. If we would have been in that position when our kids were babies, I definitely would have considered finding an instructor.

I haven’t heard of this but if I could, I would sign up my kids in a heartbeat. Like they said, parental supervision comes first, but being prepared is just wise.

That first video was amazing…I couldn’t help but consider the creative hand of God in that child…the instinct, the natural intelligence…awesome.

If I had a child, and a pool, I would definitely sign up. My mom taught my brother how to swim at 5 months, both above and under water.

Yes! I’ve heard of this, but didn’t try it myself. Our first child didn’t learn to swim until he was nearly 6, the second when he was 4 and the third when she was 3 (and she went on to become a state swimming champion). I’m sure my fears had something to do with this phenomenon, but still — there is a difference of personality (and should I add– gender). First of all, though, you’ve got to make sure you’re keeping an eye on your kids; things can happen really, really fast.

I actually have good friends whose young daughter drowned in their backyard pool before they could teach her to properly swim (they’d had the pool for ten days, I believe). I will not be forwarding this link to them, but I do think it’s a good idea to teach your kids to swim as young as you can (this child was four).

That is amazing! I felt bad for that child whining in the water after 5 minutes just floating out there by himself on the first video.
