A Den of Vipers And Thieves

POSTED IN: Culture, Makes You Think

In light of our current economic crisis, consider the fiery words of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, who said this to a delegation of bankers in 1832:

Gentlemen, I have had men watching you for a long time, and I am convinced that you have used the funds of the bank to speculate in the breadstuffs of the country. When you won, you divided the profits amongst you, and when you lost, you charged it to the bank.

You tell me that if I take the deposits from the bank and annul its charter, I shall ruin ten thousand families. That may be true, gentlemen, but that is your sin! Should I let you go on, you will ruin fifty thousand families, and that would be my sin!

You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend to rout you out, and by the eternal God, I will rout you out.

Well said Mr. Jackson. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Do these words ring true for you?

Yeah, too bad he already did the whole president thing, huh?

Found the quote in some Editorial somewhere talking about the whole economic crisis and how the banks aren’t taking any responsibility. I’ll have to find the article.

Seriously, I was just discussing this with a co-worker.. how I don’t feel that I should have to pay for other people’s failures, especially when they were never helping me before …

I say let them all fail!

Well, whether or not we should let them fail is a pretty complicated economical discussion.

What just ticks me off is the fact that we got into this mess because greedy men with power and lack of foresight didn’t think of the consequences to their behavior. This didn’t happen overnight.

Even this bailout bill, they’ve been working on it for MONTHS and all of a sudden it’s sprung on America while they tell us that we have to pass it or else??? Smells awfully fishy to me.

I think that this is a prime example of how sin doesn’t just affect the sinner… sometimes the consequences of one person’s sin effect a multitude…

    How unfortunate.

BUT… God has the power to redeem situations such as these, and that’s where I am choosing to place my faith.

    Happy Tuesday!

    The question is…
Now that it hasn’t passed, what DOES this really mean for Americans in debt? I’m 23, and I don’t have any debt (praise the Lord), but it would seem that trying to get out is like trying to shovel water out of a pool…It’s a lonnng journey. Even the stock market went stupid that first day when everyone thought it’d be passed. …I just don’t know what will happen.

    Great find Brad.

This whole thing is driving me a bit crazy..the bailout and all.

Here is a good solution if anyone is interested. Comes from Dave Ramsey and is based on common sense. What a concept.

It even has links to plaster your congresspeople with…which is kindof fun because I think it drives them crazy.
