Speaking of Paradigm Shifts…
POSTED IN: Culture
I wrote a post earlier today about recognizing paradigm shifts. Here’s one I came across this afternoon:
Obama Campaigning on XBox 360
It appears that the Obama campaign is taking advantage of every form of advertising media available, even video games. Obama billboards were recently spotted in the Xbox 360 racing game Burnout Paradise.
“I can confirm that the Obama campaign has paid for in-game advertising in Burnout,” said Holly Rockwood, director of corporate communications at Electronic Arts.
At the very least, however, several gamer sites are now excitedly talking about the Obama billboard, which translates into some level of viral messaging success. It’s certainly a better idea than John McCain’s Pork Invaders, a Facebook game the McCain campaign launched this summer.
What do you think?
Brilliant advertising or wasteful campaign spending?

My vote is for wasteful. Funny I went to find the demographics on the average XBox owner and an article about Obama came up.
Anyhow…it would seem to me a billboard in real life would be more timely and cost effective and just as many people would ignore it in the real world as they did online.

It may be wasteful but does it contribute to the Obama brand as a fresh young politician who can identify with the youth? Presumably the voters of tomorrow?

I’m not sure it’s wasteful at all. I mean, look at the buzz it’s already created on the Internet. That story has had 350 Diggs just since this afternoon.
Regardless of whether it captured the attention of the viewers who played the game it at least represented some of the new and unique advertising opportunities that are available to us today.

i still don’t know how I feel about Obama and his run for president. To know that he is getting into every ally open to him, and using it, makes me wonder about him. I can’t say that its wasteful because he knows what he’s doing, but it does scare me that a possible future president is getting so “worldy” just for a presidental race. Will he be like this when he’s president, if he’s president??

hmmm, I teach in a school district that is made up of families of which 67% that are at or below the poverty line. They don’t have time to study, they don’t have time to create new possibilities for themselves and they are VICTIMS of “Corperate America” that can’t wait for Barrack Obama to rescue them
BUT …
They do have time to watch 8 hours of Television EVERY DAY and play video games incessently as a family activity.
So I’m thinking he knows exactly where to reach his target audience.

It is brilliant marketing. There’s no question about it.
A more appropriate question that I’ve been dealing with is – Do we really want every warm body to vote? Of course, Obama is from Chicago (vote early, vote often).
I have to say this carefully because it could get misconstrued. Some people are interested in how the country is run (both red and blue), and some don’t care. I don’t really have a problem with either.
What’s troubling with these ads is that the same kids that get swayed by a hot looking girl telling them to use a certain brand of body spray are getting swayed to vote. Ya know?
It works, people get swayed by hype, he’ll probably win, but it’s not how I’d like the future of my country decided.

That’s a very good point Jason. I think we’re starting to see a new demographic of voters growing up. Like you said, it’s a little disconcerting that young voters can be so easily swayed by cool marketing rather than being concerned by real issues.

Kids aren’t the only ones who play video games. I’ve known people up into their early thirties who still play. So is the strategy useful? Probably, yes. Deceitful? I doubt it.
