I have a copy of Churched by Matthew Paul Turner that I would like to give away to a lucky reader. This is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading (read my review) so I’m excited to share it with you.

I’m so churched when I was a teen that old ladies thought I was a sweet boy so they baked cookies and brought them in the classroom where I taught first grade Sunday school. This is also the same classroom where I made out with my girlfriend during lock-ins.
Thankfully, I’m a recovering hypocrite.

I was so churched that I can sing any hymn and pick out any of the harmonies because being in a Mennonite church all we did for worship is use a pitch pipe and then we sang verses 1,2 and 4 (3 and 5 were outcasts)

I am so churched that I know tons of old-school sunday school songs, didn’t listen to secular music until I was 17, didn’t smoke until I was 18, and gave that up after one week because I felt guilty. I still take notes during sermons and still play ‘Bible Challenge: the Board Game’, which is not all bad. The difference now? I actually have a relationship with God.

and now for the icing on the cake (the following is 100% true)…
I am/was so churched that my Christian Elementary school had Harvest Parties at Halloween, and you could only dress up as a Farmer or other Christian approved costume. I came as JIMMY SWAGGART for two straight years, and all of a sudden, right before the third year, my parents didn’t let me be Brother Jimmy anymore…and I couldn’t understand why…

this is a true story.
i am so churched i attended jimmy swaggart bible college the year after the big no, no. when asked why i still went i said, “because god told me to go not jimmy swaggart.”
and while i learned much while i was there i am most proud of the mrs. degree i earned (e-hem, flirted for).
i have the best husband in the whole entire universe.

Great comments. My wife and I are laughing our heads off.
Personally, and this is true, I was so churched that when I was called to the ministry at age eight I would preach sermons based on the verses in the the Broadman Hymnal.
In addition, I was so churched that to this day I only know the 1st, 2nd, and last stanza of more than 100 hymns.

Nick took mine, but it’s totally true, so I’m using it anyway. And I’m old enough that I have a slightly different twist anyway.
I was so churched that I broke all my rock albums (that’s VINYL, people!) and gave them all to my youth pastor as an offering.
I still re-buy one of those albums occasionally. It kills me some of the things that were “devil music”! Billy Joel, Styx… man. Now I go to a church where we cover that music. I call it the “un-church.” It’s good to go to a place where your music director was nominated for a Grammy. Nuff said.

I’m so churched that after 24 years of growing up in church, being a minister’s kid, going to a Bible college, and working for two mega-churches, I sometimes think it’s odd that we don’t start business meetings or classes at my secular university with prayer.
