Feed Me!

POSTED IN: Authenticity

I’ve come to the realization that my blog has a voracious appetite.

Every morning when I wake up I can hear it calling to me.

“Write on me! Feed Me!”

And of course I willingly oblige it.

Throughout the day it wants little snacks. People have read what I’ve written and leave comments. So many great comments. Every time a new comment appears on my blog and I’m at my computer I’ll immediately read it. Every single one.

On the days when I happen to get a really great response to a post I’ve written I immediately begin thinking of what I need to write next to top that.

Don’t get me wrong, I really don’t view my blog as an obligation or something I have to “keep up.” I love the opportunity to share my thoughts and passions with you. I’ve enjoyed connecting with so many amazing new people that I would have never met otherwise. I love the challenge of expressing my thoughts in a unique way that will provoke thought or action. I love my blog.

I have just come to the realization that my blog, like so many things in life, can sometimes demand more time and attention than I’m able to give. Its appetite can be so great that other things in my life begin to starve. My relationships begin to take a hit.

I’m not sure what this looks like for me but I’m realizing that my blog needs to go on a diet.

No, I’m not going to shut it down or stop writing, but I am going to become more conscious of how much time I spend on it. Every so often I’ll “weigh in” here and see how I’m doing and try to be honest about when I’ve cheated.

So that’s what has been rolling around in my head this morning. What about you?

Is there anything in your life that needs to go on a diet?

Yeah, social media can be a total time-sucker. I’m trying to be more strategic about writing multiple posts at once so I’m not feeling a constant pressure to put out more and more stuff. We’ll see how well I actually do!

Yes, I think I need to go on a diet! Period! And I could probably use a diet from my computer in general.

Thank you Holy Spirit for convicting me with this post…

I realized how truly addicted to blogging I am this weekend when my host temporarily “misplaced” mysql database and I lost everything. By Sunday, however, I was perfectly content with never blogging again if they couldn’t recover it. Much my dismay, they fixed it… I was kind of hoping God would decide for me what to do.

I hear yah. when I first started my blog.. I felt like I needed to try and blog something every stinkin day. But to do that I was either taking time away from my family or taking time away from Devotion/quiet time. Neither of those 2 things is stuff I want to skimp on. (yes I just use the word skimp)

@ryan lollerskates! That made me laugh, snorting coffee. I highly suggest it. Caffeine goes straight into the bloodstream.

    @bradruggles

I’ve really been cutting down on the time I spend on the webernets. I got a fun little add-on for Mozilla that monitors exactly how long my browser is open and active. When I first got it, the hours I wasted were just gross. Lke 4 – 5 hours a day.

    Gone.

It was scary. So I trimmed the fat. It’s much better now.

@CrazyKates – Facebook and the University of Google are terrible. It destroys my productivity rather gloriously. So does blogging, but that is another story. Brad, I love your writings. I wish that we could have spent more time together when you still lived in Fort Wayne.

P.S. Did you get the new Jon Foreman album? It has a few new songs on it that are really good.

I didn’t go to Catalyst with the rest of the gang but I got the highlights. Nice to bump into you too after all these years . . . I used to see you all in Detroit at those wonderful Basic Seminars. Good to see you and Lisa are doing well!

I was thinking about something similar to this the other day, kind of in the same arena. I need to go on a computer diet all together.

From Twitter, to my blog, to reading other people’s blogs, my daily job, etc…I feel like my world is in the screen, and I cannot disconnect from it. The worst part is, I have no human interaction at my office, so the virtual world literally provides me a portal to people, but even when I get home I am finding that I cannot disconnect when I have my family(real people) right in front of me. I seriously need a computer diet in my life.

Good for you Brad. I think we often get caught up in the fun of it and it takes over.

As for a diet…yep…I need to go on a diet…a food diet.

Several years ago I did a financial diet- changed my life.
5 years ago, a life diet and how I looked at life- changed my life.
But now, I need to change my physical life.

I hate to sound redundant, but you have challenged me to acknowledge and face this exact issue myself. It is and has been affecting my relationships. Maily with my family. And as much as I love blogging, and adore my readers, my family means more to me.

I have begun doing this a little lately in almost eliminating my blog rounds. Doesn’t do anything good for my blog stats, but does wonders for my productivity.

Thank you for your honesty and transparency. You inspire others to do the same.

I love my family more than anything but I still struggle to keep my passions and priorities in order. I’m passionate about the Church, its influence on culture, and making it better. I’m constantly challenging the process - examining what I do, why I do it and its relevance in today’s progressive culture. read more
