Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

POSTED IN: Childhood Memories, Just For Fun

I’ve always had an obsession with superheroes and comic book characters.

When I was 6 I was at my Grandma’s house playing upstairs. I tied a blanket around my neck like a cape and pretended to be Superman running back and forth with my fist in front of me and my cape flying behind my back. In that moment I was the Man of Steel – unstoppable, inspiring, invincible!

Invincible, it seems, from everything except crashing through windows.

I wasn’t paying attention where I was “flying” and crashed through the window at the end of the room resulting in a trip to the hospital and some stitches in my thumb. Still have the scar. Perhaps Iron Man would have had a better defense?

I have to say though, after all these years I still think Spider-Man is probably my favorite. Like Superman his alter-ego is an ordinary, somewhat clumsy guy but when Peter Parker puts on that suit, watch out bad guys! I think the suit is one the things I love best about Spidey. You could be the most socially-backwards, unattractive person there is but if you put on the Spider-Man suit and sling yourself into a room you’ll get immediate attention.

It’s Friday and many of you are already having trouble keeping grips on reality so let’s have a little fun.

If you could choose, what type of superhero* would you be? What are your powers?

* yes, there are different types of superheroes

I was always a Marvel guy, and Spider-Man was my jam. I think the fact that there was a normal side to him was appealing to me, but I really don’t know if I associated with it at that level when I was a kid. I think I just picked him…

The power to absorb others’ powers (and retain them) would be awesome. Just saying. They wouldn’t have to lose their their power, it would would be more like a telekinetic/learning thing. I’d just touch them and *whoosh* I’d know everything about their power and how to use it. Yeah baby!

If that’s not an option, I guess I’ll go with electric powers.

That, or the power to give Peter Petrelli the ability to think!

Here’s my dilemma: Anyone that knows me knows that I’m a diehard MSU fan. The dilemma is that my favorite superhero is Wolverine. The guy heals quickly, has bones of steel, tough beyond compare, plus he’s the only guy who can pull off a hair-do like that! So, can I be a Wolverine fan and an MSU fan at the same time? I feel conflicted…

    Aaron,
Console yourself in the fact that you have a movie about 300 of you guys cavorting about on-screen while looking like Chippendale dancers!
That has to count for something, right?

Never really was into superheroes, but I did always think that it would have been cool to be a VILLAIN! I guess I always thought it would be more fun to kill superheroes. But wait, bad guys always lose…

Seriously, John Mclain (Bruce Willis) in the die hard movies was my childhood superhero growing up. How twisted is that? Yippie ky ya motha $#&*(@#$.

The superhero I wanted to be was Batman. Sure he doesn’t have super powers but he sure has a lot of cool, expensive stuff. And plus, if I had a Batmobile, my wife might think I was cool.

Ok, there are truly no cool female super hero’s, I think. (or that I am aware of:) ) I REALLY like Batman… or more like sense Christian Bale took over, I love batman!! Hahaha… but he has no great powers just an awesome car!!!

I want to fly… that would be so freakin sweet. And know how to speak every language. I know they have nothing to do with Batman… But he’s hot so it doesn’t matter

I’m down with Wolverine as well. All though I’m not that violent of a person so I don’t know how often I would be using the metal spikes in my knuckles. and I don’t know if I would the “hair” either. I would be a more trendy cool version of the Wolverine… who drinks Starbucks, listens to jazz and has an iPhone. hahah

We grew up watching (yes, laugh if you must) the old Batman TV show. My parents expressed significant distaste for “modern” television programming, so we were restricted to the shows they watched when they were growing up. Even though some of the shows (thinking Rowan and Martin’s “Laugh-In”) were inappropriate for younger children, we still got to watch them because they apparently passed the “age” acid test.

Anyway, we lived in this huge Victorian house built in the 1800s, complete with 4 foot wide mahogany staircases and the like. One day, after a particularly rousing Batman episode, my brother went into the play room and emerged a short while later with what appeared to be a long piece of string tied to a Licoln log. He ascended the staircase (you can see where this is going, I’m sure) and got all the way to the top, lodged his device in between the balusters and jumped off the second floor. My mother heard the commotion and came running.

Finding my brother dangling from the second floor, she screamed in horror. My brother proudly announced, “Look, Mom! My Bathook works!”

    He was about 4.

I believe I would like the ability to walk through walls. Karen would like the ability to shoot spaghetti from her fingers.

When someone ticked me off, I would put my hand behind my back and a cream pie would instantly appear. I then would shove the pie into the offending party’s face.[smiling at the thought]

If someone steals your parking spot, then you see them in the store, BOOM! cream pie to the face!

If someone has a snide remark about the mismatched clothing your child is wearing, BOOM! cream pie to the face!

I would love this superpower! Of course, you would also need a superpower to not get caught…perhaps an invisiblity mask…I will have to keep working on that part…
