We’re heading into the Holiday season which means that thousands of companies and brands will be competing for your money. I talked yesterday about our decision to participate in the Advent Conspiracy this Christmas. But what about the stuff we all buy during the rest of the year?

How would you feel if you knew that pair of jeans you just bought or the shoes you’re wearing were made by slave labor?

Did You Know…

According to UNICEF, an estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked every year to be used as domestic servants, factory workers, camel jockeys, child soldiers and sex slaves. Human trafficking generates an estimated $9.5 billion a year, attracting organized criminal gangs and leading to corruption on a global scale.

Chain Store Reaction

Chain Store Reaction is an open letter to the producers of your favorite products.  Through their web site you can send emails to many popular manufacturers asking them to promise to investigate slavery in their product chains and to clean it up where they find it.

Before you make your purchases this holiday season, be sure to spend some time researching your purchase to ensure that you’re not unknowingly participating in child slavery around the world. Be bold and let manufacturers know that you won’t stand for them profiting at the expense of innocent people forced into manual labor.

If you take the time to send a letter out through Chain Store Reaction, be sure to leave a comment here and let us know.

[...] What does Christmas have to do with slavery? Why such an abrupt transition? I’ll ignore your second question and answer the first: human trafficking is a thriving global industry, and many manufacturers of items on your Christmas list are being asked to investigate child slavery in their product chains and to clean it up where they find it. Read all about human trafficking, child slavery, and Chain Store Reaction on my friend Brad Ruggles’ recent blog entry here. [...]
