I’m a wandering nomad. At least when it comes to getting haircuts.

I bounce from one cheap-sports-themed-haircut-franchise to the next, forever looking for the perfect stylist to give me a good haircut at a great price. Always looking but never satisfied. When it comes to my hair you could say it has a Narnia complex – always winter but never Christmas

The fact that I have extremely thick, fast-growing hair doesn’t help matters. Part of the problem is that I want a good haircut but I have a personal aversion towards spending more than $15.

Now I don’t have any issues with those of you guys who spend $30 on a haircut or you ladies who have to refinance the house to get your locks cut, highlighted and styled. I just know my hair and I know it shouldn’t take any longer than 15-20 minutes to cut. After I tip, I think $18 is a reasonable price to pay for a quick, simple guy’s haircut.

I’ve experimented with different looks and styles through the years. Shortly after I became a Youth Pastor I thought it would be cool to go all Joel Houston with the long hair and highlights. Unfortunately I just couldn’t pull that look off.

I even went bald for a couple of weeks. I loved that I could wake up in the morning and walk out the door without having to do anything to my hair but I didn’t like all the compassionate looks I kept getting from everyone who thought I was undergoing chemotherapy.

So instead I’ve kept my semi-short, non-highlighted hairstyle. I continue wandering, searching for the perfect $15 haircut from a stylist who knows how to make my unruly hair behave.

What about you? Where do you get your hair cut and how much do you pay?

I get my hair cut at my mom’s best friend’s salon (Southwest Haircare and Day Spa). And yes, it costs $29 without tip. I’ve been going there since I was a little kid.

I did the salon thing for almost 12 years and honestly never was pleased with what I received.

This past year I returned to my roots, going back to the good ole’ manly barber shop. Dude there gives me exactly what I am looking for everytime. Never gets it wrong.

The best is when he puts the hot shaving foam on the back of my neck and razors it. Dang, it feels good!

Anyways…..$9 per cut and I have yet to be led astray since returning to him.

Is it bad that I’m laughing so hard? I think becasue I feel your pain in so many ways.. because I am the same EXACT way.

Although I have been going to the same girl for 8 yrs.. She is awesome. Marina @ Bella Tu Salon. She charges $22 for a men’s cut and she takes about 30 mins to do my hair. She is worth the $$$ after all the bad haircuts I’ve had in the past.

Brad, you should go for one of the styles on this website, if you’re in to looking like men’s tennis champions of yesteryear.

@Bunk – I tried a barbershop recently. Loved the hot shaving cream, HATED the after-shave he put on afterwards. I smelled like an old man the rest of the day.

@Adam – I think I would pay $22 if I knew I could get a good haircut every time. Does your girl travel?

@Curtis – I think I could totally rock the Andre Agassi hair styles from the 90s.

My mom cuts my hair and if you come out to visit I bet she’d cut yours all you have to do is sweep up.

I say keep it semi-short and add some facial hair art to the mix.

We lucked out and have a couple of really good stylist at Sport Clips in North Little Rock but you have to time it just right because everyone wants them. I sat waiting for 40 minutes just for one of them before.

I’ve also gone to a high end stylist in a very modern cool looking salon and paid $40 bucks and it looked like they just took clipper #2 and scrubbed my head.

From 1996 until early 2008 my college roommate and I cut each others hair. Same haircut every time. And free. (helps that we both went to school in Massachusetts and both now live in Pennsylvania)

I decided to move on and go to a stylist, not sure why. I go to Segro’s in Lancaster, PA. Al is the man. He goes on and on about how great he is and tells off-color jokes. It’s like seeing a show and getting a haircut. He charges me $13 and I tip $5 for a total of $18. I go every 5 weeks.

I live in Fort Worth (DFW). FACT. I have a lady that flies in from Las Vegas every 6 weeks to cut my hair.

To clarify my fact, one of our Church Planter’s wives, who can give a serious haircut, moved to Vegas with Her husband to plant a church. She maintained all of her clients here and flies back every 6 weeks and gives a stupid number of haircuts in a week.

I have a great set up. $15 and I have a set appt that I never have to think about it.

Like @Bunk, I also am a fan of the old school barber. The shop I go to is run by a couple of ladies but the best thing ever is that the hot towels.

I’m thinking of rawkin the Arthur Ashe doo.. I could totally pull it off like I did in the 80’s.. just thinner … and grayer..

Funny this comes up. Today I will be going to the local barber shop. It is run by a couple of old men. So it takes me back to when I used to go with me dad, before my sister started to cut hair. She has been cutting my hair now for about 27 years. But, this time of year is very busy for her and me, so I called yesterday to try to get in today, made an appointment, then realized it wouldn’t work due to a orthopedic specialist appointment for my oldest daughter. What is funny is a Barber’s cut and a Salon’s cut are completely different. Like you Brad, my hair is thick and grows fast. So with this Barber doo, I won’t be able to let it go for six weeks, it just does not work. I actually contemplated doing what Themisfit does, but my wife said she doesn’t want a seasonal serial killer for Christmas. Yes, she hates when I shave my head, when we lived in NC away from my sister, I could not find a decent cut, so I resorted to shaving occasionally.

I am married to a hairdresser. She has been doing hair for over 20 years and is a professional. If you find a good barber or hairstylist you should stick with her or him. If they are good it is because they have put in a lot of time to learn their craft.

My wife has customers that drive as far as 300 miles to get their hair done by her. A good hairstylist knows that it is not just a haircut but much more. She realizes that a person can come into the salon in a funk and leave feeling like a new person. She takes her time with her clients and accepts nothing less than perfection on her part.

Sometimes I get frustrated when I hear people “bargan shop” for a good hair cut then complain for the next couple of weeks about how bad it is. I compare bargain shopping for a haircut much like those people who would rather hire a graphic designer from India who is much much cheaper than someone from the U.S., say someone like Brad Ruggles for example, because they just can’t see paying more than $15 for a good haircut.

A professional hair stylist is just that, a professional. She or he does not just give a haircut. They make sure you understand what shampoos or conditioners work best for your type of hair. If they are good they will not give you a perm and a color at the same time like a lot of “chain” salons do. If they are good they will offer extra hair treatment to help you keep a good healthy head of hair at no extra charge.

It is more than a haircut with a professional. When you find a good hair stylest keep her or him. Take care of them and they will take of them.

Don’t be cheap with them. Remember they are professionals as well, just like each of you in your daily jobs. I bet none of you like it when people pass your services by for a better bargain.

Sorry to rant…….lol On a lighter note – You know what the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is???

    Two weeks………

    Cheers………..eric

I’ve always wondered how some people keep their bald heads so shiny. It must be a skill.

I haven’t gotten my hair cut in way too long but when I do, I go to TGF haircutters. The lady that cuts me hair is way too sweet – I don’t pay much, but I do tip!
