Andrew Peterson: Behold The Lamb of God
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Music
There’s a lot of great Christmas music out there this season. Like I said before, I’m a Christmas music junkie so I grab up just about everything I can find. But there are a few artists who have given us a little different take on the traditional Christmas album.
Andrew Peterson’s album, Behold The Lamb of God: The True Tall Tale of the Coming of Christ, is one of those albums that can become a Christmas family tradition. It tells the story of the coming of Christ chronologically through song. The second and third tracks take us back to the first passover and Moses leading the Children out of Egypt. There’s even a great song called Matthew’s Begats that puts the genealogy of Jesus from Matthew 1 to song (I don’t know too many artists who see Matthew 1 as song-writing material).
I wanted to remind (or teach) the audience that the story of Christmas doesn’t begin with the birth of Jesus. Many people tend to forget or have never even learned that the entire Bible is about Jesus, not just the New Testament. So the musical begins with Moses and the symbolic story of the Passover and works its way through the kings and the prophets with their many prophecies about the coming Messiah to the awful four hundred years of silence before God told Mary she’d be having a baby. The story picks up in more familiar territory with Mary and Joseph and the actual birth. The final song, Behold the Lamb of God, ties together the Passover and the beauty and scope of the story
If you appreciate Andrew Peterson’s simple folk/story-teller style from his previous albums like Resurrection Letters and The Far Country (or my favorite, Love & Thunder) you’ll love this unique take on the Christmas story. And for those of you lucky enough to be in one of the cities where Andrew is touring you can catch the Christmas concert of Behold The Lamb of God (like I’ll be doing tonight in Kokomo).
CD GIVEAWAY!
An album this good needs to be shared. I have 2 COPIES of Behold The Lamb of God that I’d love to give away. To enter, simply leave a comment with the name of your favorite Christmas carol. I’ll choose the two winners at random over the weekend. Consider it part of my Christmas gift to you!

Coolness, that sounds awesome. Pastor Campbell and Sherri would love that.
My favorite literal Christmas carol is Joy to the World, especially the last verse. Second to that, my favorite Christmas song is White Christmas (sung by Bing Crosby of course! lol).
Cool giveaway.

O Holy Night
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

It’s not a traditional one … but a local singer Derek Walcott (I’m from Barbados in the Caribbean) sings a song “Glory to God in the Highest Heaven!” from the perspective of the angels…. it is beautiful!
“Glory to God in the highest heaven!
Peace to His friends in the earth…”
I know, I know .. no one outside of my island will know that song, but it really IS a favourite of mine…
And this album sounds REALLY COOL…

actual carol would be “O Holy Night” since it was my dad’s favorite and i always think of him when it’s played.
although recently my favorite Christmas song would be Mariah Carrey’s “All I want for Christmas is You”. i know it’s kinda weird since it’s a girl singing it, but i recently had a “God moment” listening to that song and hearing God sing that to me, and then i to Him.

I am so glad someone else knows “Dominick the Italien Christmas Donkey”! That is a GREAT song we first heard out on the east coast.
I love “Mary’s Song” by Amy Grant. Gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. Not necessarily a “carol” though….I’ll keep thinking.
