Music To Make Your Morning
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Music
Our friends Dan & Laura drove down from Michigan yesterday and spent the night here last night. Lisa and I were both up talking with them until we were practically falling asleep on the couch. Needless to say we didn’t feel like getting out of bed this morning when the alarm clock went off. On top of that Chloe had come into our room during the night saying she was having a hard time sleeping and kept waking up.
So this morning I had two girls in my room who didn’t want to get out of bed. I always think it’s helpful to wake up to a good song so I jumped on my iTunes and started playing some.
First I played Good Morning Beautiful by Steve Holy (yes, it’s Country, but Lisa liked it). Then I put on Beautiful Day by U2 (for me), Oh Happy Day by Steve Fee and Was It A Morning Like This by Sandi Patti. Ok, so maybe I didn’t put on Sandi Patti. I did say I wanted I wanted to wake everyone up happy, remember?
So what other songs would be good to wake up to when you’re tired?

Oh, and like him for whatever reason you like, John Mayer is not perky… just saying.

@Jim – Quite an extensive list there! I haven’t heard of PureNRG before. I downloaded a couple of their tracks for my oldest to listen to. Thanks.
And what my brother Jason is referring to is the way my mom used to wake us up when we were kids. She would come into our rooms and say “This is the day that the Lord has made…” and we would have to say “…and I will rejoice and be glad in it.” I’m not sure how much we were actually “rejoicing” when we said that.

@Brad,
Some of the songs may not be all that perky, but they seemed to fit the situation you described.
My kids, 5, 7 and 10 really like PureNRG. You can find a few videos of them on YouTube also, so they can see what they look like. You can find a link to pictures of a concert here:http://blog.capturethisphoto.com/post/2008/02/Winter-Jam-Concert.aspx
I’ve said that “this is the day” phrase a few times to our kids early in the morning, from time to time, but they never seem to be very rejoiceful…
Recently I told my oldest son in the morning… “This is the first day of the rest of your life, lets make it a good one.”… he stared at me blankly.

Start that playlist with Restless by Needtobreathe. If that doesn’t get you moving, nothing will.

Honey, I didn’t want to move this morning and your music definitely motivated me.
I have burned in my memory the site of you dancing with Chloe (half sleeping) to wake her up.

For a gentle wakeup that makes me want to get up, most anything from Owl City.
A song called “Vida” by a Honduran hip group named DC Reto will fire me up anytime. But I think it’s less the song and more the memories of the song. Heard it first on a mission trip to Costa Rica. They absolutely LOVED that music there.

Beautiful Day is a perfect get up and get going song. It has a little kick to it. Positive too.
I like Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World in the morning occasionally. A little sappy, but it gets the job done.

My mom, the crazy woman would bust in the room on the only day I could sleep in, Sunday, would you believe that curse. You know since we would go to church every Sunday….. any way that is a very good thing. But she would have the nerve to bust in just a few minutes before we needed to wake up and sing: RISE AND SHINE AND GIVE GOD THE GLORY GLORY………. I love my mother but this solo of this chorus would last for the rest of the morning as well and on the way to church and the rest is history…oh, in the 80’s then we would sing it at church….I’m out

OK… I am defending myself. It was early in the morning when I commented about John Mayer. He may not be “perky”… that was a bad choice of words… He is upbeat. There… how’s that. And no matter what.. John Mayer is the best to listen to not matter the feeling!! Haha..
And I agree with April. Jack Johnson’s Banana Pancakes is a great song. And child friendly.

In Grace Kids Company we love PureNRG! We have made 2 music videos to their songs. I would guess that Chloe and Emily would like it.
U2’s ‘Beautiful Day’ would be my pick for wake up songs.

BJ! My mom would do the same thing!! But she would also sing “Good morning! Good morning Good morning! Its time to rise and shine!” I think it was off the Bullfrogs and Butterflies album. It was fun at first…but got old after a while. Brad, I think it would definitely be a kid-pleaser if you can find it.

@Carrie – You’re the second person to recommend PureNRG to me. I downloaded a few of their songs over the weekend and the girls loved them. They especially loved their cover of “Footloose.”
@Kassie – Wow…Bullfrogs & Butterflies. Now THAT takes me back!
