Your Favorite 2009 Superbowl Ad
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Marketing, Videos
The 2009 Superbowl has come and gone and with it the hundreds of millions of dollars spent by companies on commercials. This year’s commercials fetched a record $3 million dollars for a 30 second spot. There were no real stand-outs this year in my opinion (like FedEx’s ‘06 Caveman commercial or Sobe’s ‘08 Thrillicious). Overall I thought the ads were a little weak, especially at their record price.

The most creative ad in my opinion came in the form of a 1-second commercial by Miller High Life. Not only did they save millions of dollars by not purchasing a 30 second spot, they generated buzz from people watching for the spot (if you missed it you can watch it on 1SecondAd.com).
This was also the first year to feature 3D commercials. I donned my goofy-looking glasses in time to watch the Sobe 3D Lizard Lake but ended up with a headache. And as ususual, GoDaddy (the lack of a link here is intentional) continued to try to push the envelope with their attempt at sensual marketing (yet another reason I hate GoDaddy).
Some of my favorites this year included Bridgestone’s Mr Potato Head and Dorito’s Crystal Ball.

Brad, I’ll post the two pictures of us in 3D glasses on facebook later today. You looked pretty stellar in them. I actually asked the eye doctor yesterday if they could make me some custom fit lenses for them.

P.S., I voted for “other”–the GE Scarecrow Ad. We were all mesmerized by it…not the funniest, but the most “ooh-ahh” moment for me.

My favs were the Doritos Crystal Ball,
the the Doritos “Beer” chips, and lastly with top honors the Pepsi “I’m Good” commercial.
I can’t believe these companies paid 3 million dollars per add.

The monster.com moose ad was my favorite. Here’s why. One single beautiful camera movement. A single joke. Simply executed. Totally memorable. Careerbuilder.com has a similar product and had a great spot as well, but spent twice as much for :60 sec and used a complicated message to make it happen. So I think monster’s was stronger.

Im with you on the Potato Head commercial, but I am a SUCKER for the E*Trade baby…”Shankopotamus” that was classic. If you haven’t seen the E*Trade baby “outtakes” you have to check them, out, I have a post on it on my blog.

Yea, I’m quite surprised that the CareerBuilder.com commercial with the Koala getting punched (“Oh dear . . . wham!”) isn’t at the top. That whole commercial wreaked of funny.

I agree with you Brad. The Miller Light one was the best. Did you ever see the outtakes?
You can catch them http://youtube.com/watch?v=K9GwHnU2ESE&feature=related and http://youtube.com/watch?v=jabk8BR0M64&feature=channel.
And Brad, the reason the ads were so bad, is they spent all their money on the ad spot and had none left over.

Thanks for posting the one second add…I was looking down and missed it; my dad and Dan both saw it though
. I uphold that the hype the ad created was every bit as effective as a longer commercial, if not more so. Brillant marketing.
