Dry Cleaning Ads Aren’t Supposed To Be This Catchy
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Marketing, Movies & TV, Videos
I came across this TV commercial last week featuring music that doesn’t make you want to rip your eardrums out. You may even find yourself humming it later.
This TV commercial for Austin Texas based Reid’s Cleaners and Laundry is an interesting mix of some old and new ideas for television advertising: the all but extinct ad jingle combined with the new trend of an indie female singer providing the vocals for the commercial’s catchy song (such as Yael Naim in the MacBook Air commercial).
The “Reid’s cleaner girl” singing and performing in the TV ad is Austin singer Erin Ivey, also known as “Austin’s urban folk sweetheart”. Erin Ivey, on the reaction to her Reid’s Cleaners commercial:
The impact so far has been surprising. I’ve been invited on television and radio programs to talk about the commercial and then been able to perform or promote my own music to their audiences. Austin is an interesting town for musicians. There’s great talent totally saturating a market that is growing and changing all the time. So, I’m excited about any boost in exposure that leads people to the music. Ultimately, that’s my focus: creating and performing my own music.
I hadn’t heard of Erin Ivey, the “urban folk sweetheart” of Austin, Texas before this but I’m loving her music. Found out that she’s on Twitter too.
Great music makes anything better, in any medium, and co-branding introduces musicians to a wider range of possible fans than they might otherwise reach. I am all for making a living in creative work, but it is imperative that the musicians are fairly compensated and agree with the ideals of the company being promoted. Hopefully musicians are in a position to make wise choices that way, but when bills are due and Dinosaur Corp. is at the door with a check, that’s a tough decision that each person has to make on their own.
She’s worth checking out on iTunes too for those who are interested in some new Indie music.
It’s nice to see TV ads coming out with decent music as opposed to the unbelievably irritating Toyota Saved By Zero ads that were so bad some said you could even die from watching it.
What’s the best or worst music you’ve heard in a TV commercial?

Frick if that isn’t catchy! But she looks slightly crazy on the headers you created…Seriously. Stare into those eyes for a second, and tell me you don’t feel just a tad bit creeped out.

@Kerry – I definitely liked the music more than the choreography. They probably could have done with a little less dancing. Still…catchy though, huh?

The worst music I have ever heard in a commercial was for a local title pawn place. It was probably the worst commercial I ever saw too.

I think that girl is cute… it’s kind of like when Michael falls in love with the chair model lady in The Office. You need to find that girl for me Brad. LOL.

As an Austinite, I’m quite familiar with the ads (people have a love/hate relationship with that ad here). I haven’t seen Erin live though, so I might check her out.
I do get a fair amount of flack about the cleaners, especially since the commercial came out — that’s my last name, spelling and all. No relation to the owners, though.

@Curtis – How cool would that be? We need a singing dry-cleaners here in Indy!
@Kiel – lol…Don’t worry man, I’ll find her for you.
@Lisa – You Austinites may have a love-hate relationship with it, but I’ll tell you what, it’s a heck of a lot better than some of the local ads I’ve seen!

The worst add to me is the “Free Credit Report.com” add with the guys who have a band etc….
The music is probably ok, but the stupid jingle portion stays in your head for days.
Best..not sure….I don’t tend to catch too many adds thanks to TIVO

I can’t use my audio video – disabled. I mean, I am, not my computer. So guess I can just agree that she’s cute. That doesn’t do me much good either…
My mom always said “Just be yourself” but when I do the online singles dating services “severely emaciated man with rare progressive incurable disease who can’t walk more than fifteen yards” doesn’t seem to work. You’d think at least a nurse or something…
But I guess mom never learned much about marketing…
For some reason I’m getting a message that your site can’t find my URL to link. But that’s definitley not disabled so I’ll just sign…
