Coulda Been In U2

Coulda Been In U2

So I was at Starbucks the other day and struck up a conversation with one of the Baristas about the new U2 album that was in the rack near the register. I asked if she was a fan (she wasn’t) and she proceeded to tell me a story about a friend of hers who is a guitar player at her church.

Turns out her friend played with the band during their early days in Dublin back in the late 70s. He stopped playing with them shortly after he got married. Supposedly after he left the band wrote him letters asking him to come back. Here’s where the story gets interesting. He never got the letters because his new wife tore them up before he could read them!

I guess she must have only told him about this later on after they’d been married long enough that she thought he wouldn’t kill her. Of course I have no way of verifying the story but I thought it was pretty crazy.

Here’s my question for you, what would you do if you found out your wife blew your chance for being in one of the most famous rock bands in the world?

Hmmm…sounds like a pretty tall tale. I don’t remember reading about another member in their book. The Edge’s brother did play with them for a little while in the beginning.

    Re: your question,

I’m not sure what I’d do. My first reaction would be something like: “Wha…? Why?…Wait, what? Why!?

@Mark – like I said, no way to confirm the story. Just thought it would be crazy IF it were true. And I think I’d have the same reaction.

@Juli – Supposedly yes. Amazingly. Not like THAT would ever come up in marital arguments though :-)

unless U2 desperately needs someone who can only play “Old McDonald” on the piano, then I don’t think this applies to me.

Hind sight is 20/20. One thing about this story is there is no way in God’s green earth the guys wife knew they would become one of the most successful bands of all-time. To her (if it’s true), they were just another Dublin garage band!

Oh the game of “What if…”

    D. Lake,

What if his wife was a time traveler from the future? Then she would have known. Also, maybe she saved his life by tearing them up. I wish I could time travel…

    Wow, what a story.

To me, doesn’t matter IF they ever became U2 or stayed just another band in Dublin…she tore up his mail!!!

    Wow.

I have a feeling that isn’t their ONLY issue, IF they are still married after 20 something years

As usual you made me think! If the story is true, Is this lady a dream killer? Was it fear of the unknown that made her do it? Was it her own insecurities and fears that caused her to manipulate the situation? Or was she unable to see the big picture and recognize the potential of U2? A reality check for all women to think over and analyze their own reactions.

I would pray that Cherith and I have such an honest relationship that she or I would never do that to each other and we would allow the other to make a decision together about that or anything…..oh I would be hurt and crushed and probably would not fully trust someone ever again if they did that to me….honestly….
