I Can Ride My Bike With No Handlebars
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Makes You Think, Music
A couple of weeks ago my brother showed me the music video for the song Handlebars by the Hip-Hop group Flobots. The song is pretty amazing and lyrically rich by itself but the music video really drives the message home. I watched the video 3 or 4 times in a row and each time picked up something different. It’s a powerful message.

After you’ve watched this a couple of times discuss it here and let me know what you got out of it.

The song and video have been brilliantly created.
I believe its a protest song against policies or perceived policies of the Bush Administration. It was hard for me to get anything else out of it because I had already checked into the song and the artist several months back. Seeing the video, only solidified what I read.
Though I disagree with their “opinions” I like their sound and their creativity.

I’ve become a big fan of the Flobots since I first heard this track several months ago. I’m not sure if I perceive it as an anti-Bush song so much as it being an opinion about opportunity and choices. Both characters in the video have choices to make, and one chooses “the greater good” while chooses celebrity and power.
They were actually interviewed by someone from Sojourners in October. You can see the video interview on their blog here: http://blog.sojo.net/2008/10/02/video-flobots-on-faith-the-rise-of-new-music-for-new-movements/

Powerful music vid. If they can make a music video that cool, then they can probably do any of the things they talked about in their song.

Well put I feel.
And as Jonathan said, ‘just because I can, doesn’t mean I should’.
Unfortunately the people with the power often do, and it will happen more as we get nearer and nearer to ‘the end’ when Jesus returns…

wicked cool….great video and piece of music.
I believe it is about choices. And with choices comes responsibility. Anti-Bush or not, a very creative way to look at this and set something up that can be interpreted in different ways.

Life and death are in the power of the tongue.
What will you use yours for?
It’s a powerful reminder that we can build up or we can destroy…and we have a choice as to how we will use it.
May grace pour over our tongues and lips as we bring glory to the One who made us.

The world says, “I can do all things”, with slogans like, “I can”. It sends a subtle message of pride.
But if we embrace & live part 2, “through Christ who gives me strength”, then we take our own self-perceived power out of the equation & give humility a platform.
All of those things we attempt will have great impact. First our family, then community, & on to a global level, if we walk in the faith required of us.

Song and video are well written and executed i have this song as well on my iphone. I got it because it made me think. After having time to examine it i have come to this conclusion i will try to communicate as best i can. there was a time when info was not so easily accessible and songs like this brought much needed attention to important topics. now however i have begun to question the validity of simply point out a problem in such a negative way. is it helpful or simply destructive and adds to the confusion in our young people. we cant get away from all the bad the second it happens there is a tsunami of information that hits the tv, radio and internet ways. it is now impossible to get away from. great post love reading your blog keep it up. let us sharpen as iron sharpens iron

this summer i went on a mission trip to China. we lead a summer camp with high school and college students and brought
ur american cultural: to some amazing group of Chinese Students.
one of the songs that was played over and over and over again was this song.
while it is catchy, it got rather annoying.
but God did us it to challenge my heart and mind.
i can change the world with the simple gifts i have been given.
(a bike, song…)
while this was not the intent of the song (i agree that it is clearly political)God used it to change my thought process and how i use what God has given me….
probably not what you were looking for…but that’s my 2 cents
