William Fitzsimmons Concert

William Fitzsimmons Concert

Last night we had the opportunity to see William Fitzsimmons in concert with some friends at Radio Radio in downtown Indy. William, for those of you not familiar with him, could best be described as a cross between Sufjan Stevens and Iron & Wine, albeit sadder. His music is, at times, almost uncomfortably intimate as he writes about subjects like death or his divorce.

Having been a fan of his morose musical style for a while now, I was anxious to see what he was like in person. He took the stage in a plain flannel shirt, a knit hat and his trademark black-rimmed glasses and beard and played I Don’t Feel It Anymore immediately without addressing the crowd. I wondered whether I should prepare myself for a musical downer of an evening but was pleasantly surprised to find William had quite the sense of humor.

“Making a couple of albums about divorce and death isn’t the best marketing decision,” he said, “but it turns out I was awesome.”

Fitzsimmons, who described himself as looking like a cross between an Al Qaeda recruit and a homeless guy, gave a great performance and kept everyone laughing in between his sad-yet-beautiful songs. Also joining him for the concert was Rosi Golan, an Israeli-born singer/songwriter with an amazing voice. Her duet, Hazy, with Fitzsimmons was one of my favorite songs of the night.

What’s the best concert you’ve been to recently?

Glad to see you’re blogging again.
I haven’t heard of any of the bands/singers you mentioned, so it sounds like I’ve got some research to do. ;)
I like the way he described himself, lol

Next time you’re trying to describe the sound of an “unknown” musician, maybe you shouldn’t use other “unknown” musicians…. I’m not saying they’re bad, I’ve just never heard of any of them, and describing them by using each other is like using a word in its own definition! :)

It was good seeing you guys and hanging out!

William (Bill as we knew him) lived down the hall from me in college. We were friends, and I never even knew he was a good musician.
