I Think I’m Part Cockroach

I Think I’m Part Cockroach

POSTED IN: Authenticity, Blog Posts

Bloggers are known for their authenticity, for letting people peek in on their everyday lives. But let’s face it, even bloggers have a few things they like to keep in the closet.

Cockroaches like to hang out in the dark. It’s safer there. No one can see you. The minute the light comes on they scatter for cover.

I can’t say that I blame the little guys. There are some things that are easier when kept out of the light of scrutiny. I’ve found myself scampering for cover a time or two myself.

Yesterday at church, Erik talked about peeling away the layers in our relationships. We read the story of how Adam & Eve lived in perfect openness with God and each other until they disobeyed.

“At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they strung fig leaves together around their hips to cover themselves.” (Gen 3:7)

And we’ve been covering ourselves up ever since.

This week I’m going to throw the light on a couple of things I’ve been struggling with. I’m trusting that shedding some light on these challenges may not only help me but perhaps someone else who is struggling with the same things.

I’ve got my finger on the light switch.

What about you? Got any cockroach in you?

I love the cockroach analogy for this! Sounds like a solid message you heard.

I think that 1 Corinthians 10:13 is always a great reminder to me when dealing with things like this.

    Yeah, I believe I do.
I always tell people I was once royalty. In a former life I was a cockroach in a castle until the King stepped on me. Maybe a little bit of cockroachiness stuck with me.

(Disclaimer – For those who take things word for word, I do not believe in reincarnation, that part was a joke)

    YES and YES.

One of the reason I started blogging was to shed some light on things and gain response.
I do this sometimes just outright in my writing and then other times I hide it if a little too personal through something I might not actually believe it to gain a response.

What I have found has been enlightening over the past 9 months I have had my blog. I have gained some great ideas, advice, and sometimes a shoulder to listen.

oh, I agree with Brian on the analogy. Great tie in!

Left to my own devices, I am that cockroach that disappears when a light is turned on…

(there’s also an injoke amongst Australians about why people in my state are cockroaches…but let’s not go there)

As others have said, love this analogy.

We need to be wise about how we’re shedding that light – Adam & Eve lived openly before God. So while we seek to live a life beyond reproach where there is nothing to hide…while we’re on the journey, spilling everything for all and sundry may not be wise – perhaps some things are just for our prayer partners/mentors/spouses for season?

I don’t know, but God will be our compass in that decision if we let Him.
