Stories like this frustrate me. The media tends to pounce on schools like this and portray them as the norm when it is far from the case. I really have a hard time with churches and schools who wield the bible as a weapon and shield their students from reality. I saw this story several weeks ago. I googled the school and found their website. I couldn’t believe that this “Christian” school caused me to stumble by using the world wide web of sin to advertise on. As I googled their school name, something must have provoked the evil google to search for sinful links because in the right hand side of google there was a link to send me to “Big Busts” and “Sexy Lap Dances R Us.” I had a melt down! I too went to an upstanding Christian school that did all they could to protect me from lust, dancing, rock and roll, and low cut blouses with the addition of sideburns below the middle of the ear…because that’s what Lucifer would wear…I didn’t know what to do with the temptation of these links popping up, so I clicked them, okay no I didn’t! There were no links. But I felt one ridiculous story deserved another one, haha!

I did however go to a school like this. 90% of all students have abandoned church all together, its sad!

I signed a commitment to my church that I would not go to dances. It was PAINFUL, but I kept my promise. I never wanted my children to endure that stupid rule. I see the seduction dancing can cause; I see the danger. It’s a matter that requires thoughtful decision making and conviction. The problem is the agreement the student made to attend that school, stupid rule or not. Sad story!
Kati wore a beautiful, flattering dress that was tasteful to prom last weekend. I was so proud of her and trust that her actions were wise when she was out of my sight. Parenting is hard and way under-paid.

Wow....I had a comment in my head and then I read what Nate wrote. Great comment. As a parent of two teen boys and one preteen boy, I cannot imagine putting them in a school with rules like that. Here’s the comment I left over at inWorship on the same story:

“I actually live about 1/2 an hour from Findlay…
…I have mixed feelings about it. Yeah, it’s legalistic. But they are entitled to their beliefs. Regardless, the kid (under scrutiny of his parents, no less) signed a paper committing to a set of behaviors. For the sake of his word, I think the kid should skip out on prom.

I went to a legalistic bible college and got kicked out for a number of reasons. Some of the rules I broke were dumb rules…others, not so dumb. BUT I broke rules I had a greed to abide by. My expulsion was warranted.

Disagreeing with particular dogma is one thing, being rebellious is another….”

Further, why the heck did this family bring the story to the news? Really…as if liberal media needs another reason to put down Christianity.

I am sure Christ in heaven thinks the dancing rule is a little silly and mand made, but I’m sure he’s much more concerned with the slander that one kids’ parents irritation is putting His church into!

It’s crazy. I attended the “Prison House of the South” for a year of my college career. I remember very vividly how one of my hallmates was unable to return to campus for the spring semester because it had been discovered that he went to see a movie (in a theater–*gasp*!) while on break.

Totally asinine.

I think part of this problem is that so many parents have abdicated their role as caregiver. It’s as if they’re trying to ameliorate their guilt of being an uninvolved parent by signing some level of custodiansihp of their children over to a religious institution. Equally as unfortunate is that there are plenty of organizations willing to take up that mantle. Instead of training our parents to parent, they’re selling parenting services and “peace of mind.”

When you have to give account some day of the things you were responsible for, you can’t pass that buck. Grow up, be a parent, and train your kids properly so that they’ll know how to handle difficult peer situations.

Parents are only doing a disservice to their children’s future by allowing the reigns to be handed off to someone else.

Thank you young people for your heart. Up to this point was the young man supposed to have his head in the sand. We all even love someone who dresses in what we say is inappropriate. Our Christianity teaches us to live in the world but be not of the world. Guess what? We and God only have one place to find people. IN THE WORLD. In spite of the dress and the dancing, the safest way to attend the prom was with a young man mature enough to handle what may have been served up. Who is this Principal to play judge and jury? I congratulate both sets of parents for their creativity in serving Christianity to the lost. Expulsion at the end of the school term is unthinkable. Will the school refund the tuition since they did not let the student body know that this restriction was part of the requirements for attending?
