God Is Not A White Man

Far too often we infuse God with our own Western ideals and philosophies. We tend to think of him as an older gentleman, white capitalist Republican who listens to Coldplay in his spare time (ok, that last one is probably true).
God reminds us that He cannot be put into a box of our own ideals or creation (Numbers 23:19). His thoughts and ways are so much higher or greater than we could imagine (Isaiah 55:8-9)
I could keep talking about it…or you could just watch the music video for this great new song by the Michael Gungor band. Appropriately enough for those of us raised in Sunday School, the music video (developed and directed by Goodwin Films) was constructed entirely of felt. How awesome is that? So grab some animal crackers and give this a watch.

I think some of the worst Western characteristics or ideals we attribute to God are…
-that God would be a radical Republican
-that God hates Muslims, homosexuals, and the Yankees
-that God sends floods and hurricanes to punish people

I could not enjoy this video AT ALL.
I didn’t have any fruit punch to go with my animal crackers.
I do think it is a little blasphemous to show the hearts fly over the plate of vegetables and turn it into two little dancing pieces of candy. I refuse to show this to my children.
However,those are my personal opinions, I do agree God loves Coldplay & U2.

What a cool little film clip!
I’ve been guilty of trying to make god in my image, instead of the other way around.
Some of the worst Western characteristics we have shoved into our God boxes-
- that He is easily understood
- that He holds conservative political views
- that He holds liberal political views
- that He is predictable and obeys formula’s

God is so omnipotent, that He can’t be boxed in to one nationality/race/group/etc.
But God is so personal, that He IS a White man. He is also Black. And Asian. In fact, that is one of the coolest things about Christianity, that the News can apply to ALL cultures. I think it’s awesome that African Americans have a Black Jesus. God meets us where we are.
And with a video like that, instead of asking “What are some of the worst Western characteristics or ideals we attribute to God?” Let’s ask what are the best characteristics.
God loves everyone. Even White Republicans.

That God is contained to Sunday morning. That He is a segmented part of the American life, useful for funerals, crises and sundays. But not much more than that.
as a recent tweet wrote, “Just got my God on, now to get my grub on.”
As if God and grub are coequal. Sigh.
