Excellent post Brad. I couldn't have said it any better! You are correct, the church is none of those things you mentioned...The Church is made up of sinners who have been redeemed by Christ.

Though we are now set apart in God's eyes, we have been commissioned to go out and spread the news that the same free forgiveness we have received is likewise available to everyone.

I'm an independent Christian singer/songwriter and I often write songs in the same vein as this.

It's refreshing to others speak up about this. Thanks for this and be blessed!

Jeremy you said

"Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”

Yes lets live in grace now and not wait until we die. There is a lot for christians to learn from Buddhist teachings on this subject on how to "be in the now"

Merrill, those who go looking for pats on the back will ultimately be disappointed the first time they're overlooked, slighted or some other aggreious(sp?) act.

Church isn't a place to go to get pats on the back and seek your rewards from other believers. Unfortunately for those who use it in this way, they already have their reward.

Surely you've seen those who attend so the preacher can point out some wonderful thing they did during the week.

I truly agree with much of what you said. However, I think that is one more thing I waould like to point out that church isn't. It isn't about what we think it should be. When Jesus came, the church people of his day hated him because and I'll quote Jesus here, "I didn't come to destroy the law but fufil it. See...they missed it altogether. They had it all figured out and Jesus came with the authority to demonstrate it, then the pharisees could see that they missed the mark. THe chuch is a social institution today more then anything else. When Jesus asked his disciples, "who do men say that I am, and Peter answered him and said though art the Christ, the son of the living God. Jesus replied, Blessed are you Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood hath not revealed this to you, but my father in Heavan. Upon this rock will I build my church. It's a spiritual revelation, that Christ will build his chuch upon, not creeds of man but IT takes the spirit that rose from the grave and came back on the day of pentecost to come and make the word live a Christian life. I think our expectations are on the wrong thing so much. So often we as humans want to judge others flesh when our flah is not redeemable. We lose our true focus,CHRIST AND WHAT HE DID AND CONTINUES TO DO!!! HE is alive today and will provide power to whosoever will ask.

Brad,

Nicely said, sir. For myself, I detest what man has done to "church", nullifying it for the sake of their traditions, and I belong to The Invisible Church instead.

I am looking forward to reading more of your stuff, as time allows. I think you're on the right track, here!

Church is about making Christ "followers" into real Christ "disciples" and equipping them to go out into the world to make Him known. Church is not primarily a "soul saving station". Nor is it a club house for believers. It's purpose is to help believers become imitators of Christ, and that includes going and making disciples and bringing glory to His name.

Actually, "church" isn't about "them," either. It's all about Christ. All of it. Christ at the center. Witness. Mercy. Life Together.--All flowing from a relationship with Deity. Otherwise, good post.
