Life Outside Of Work

Life Outside Of Work

So Brett Favre has come out of retirement (again) to play for the Minnesota Vikings. His $12 million dollar salary is proof, some say, of the success of the Cash For Clunkers program.

Seriously though, it’s kinda sad to see someone so consumed with their career that they can’t exist outside of it. In our society it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to not be defined by our job title or career accomplishments.

What interests, hobbies or activities do you engage in to make a life for yourself outside of work?

Thankfully I am not defined by my job. Because how sad would that be if I wasn’t a Product Consultant for a health ins company I would feel lost.. and with out purpose.

Although my life doenst allow for a lot of time for extra hobbies.. I just enjoy my family, and friends as much as I can.

Exercise or play some type of competitive sport. I guess I do for fun what Brett Favre can’t break away from!

In all fairness- I don’t know that we can honestly make that statement having been on this earth just a little bit longer than Brett has played in the NFL (19 seasons I think). That’s a long time in the NFL, in the spotlight. I also think there is a part of him that wants to stick it to the Packers.

I don’t think it will be easy for me to “retire” when the day comes and I feel that I have a pretty healthy life outside of work…(besides, with the way the financial sector is performing, we might not be able to retire until 5 years after death).

My biggest complaint is his approach. I think things would be a lot different had he said from the beginning – I want to play.

Allow me to play devil’s advocate for Mr. Favre…
So, you retire. Then somebody offers you $12 MILLION to do something you love, to play for a team where you know their offense, the conference their in, and they were a playoff contender last year? Sounds to me like a win-win. I’d probably do it for less than $10 Million, lol!
That being said, not being defined by what you do can be difficult, and I think especially when you’re in full-time ministry. Because it’s viewed by so many as being a ‘perfect job working with christians all day’ *cough* it’s easy to begin to find your self-worth in your career. A friend of mine recently said, “It’s like you’re paid to be a christian.”

I like to ride. On the Favre situation: I have no comment. A man has got to do what a man’s got to do and if he consulted with his wife then go for it! That being said: I don’t watch or care about football at all.

The stuff that is “life” for me is being at home with Heidi and not having to do work or coursework for a night. We might go get a bite to eat or just lounge.

I do play basketball once a week with some guys from church…that’s a good exertion of frustration and power…gotta love it.

I do worry about being consumed with work…there are a lot of standards to be lived up to. But I also know, that when one believes that what he is doing is God’s current calling on his life–he trusts God to help him divide up his time appropriately. (I make it sound so easy).

In ministry–what defines the line between going “all out” for the Kingdom and ministering to your family? And why do we cross it?

Unfortunately, society tends to “pigeon hole” people according to their profession, and people tend to “live” for their job. If that’s what makes you happy, then fine… But unusual. You should have more in your life than just your job… Think about it!
