Mapping The 7 Deadly Sins

Mapping The 7 Deadly Sins

Wired Magazine just published graphics from a team from the Kansas State University Geography Department who undertook the task of mapping the 7 Deadly Sins. The maps of sin are created by plotting per-capita stats on things like theft (envy) and STDs (lust).

Some of the information, such as Texas being a hot-spot for gluttony, comes as no surprise. Other parts of the study, such as the red band of wrath running through the Bible belt, raised a few eyebrows.

What do you think of this study compared to where you live? Does it line up?

the south (carolinas especially) are big on lust, wrath, and envy? sounds right.

only thing – i think that we are pretty big on gluttony. that map doesn’t take into account all of the fried chicken and bbq we eat.

I think that the way that they have decided the indicators for the sins is faulty. I think that the areas that are considered “greedy” tend to have the most amount of money being given away to charities per capita. Just because you earn a lot of money doesn’t make you greedy, it has more to do with what you do with the money. And sloth? Don’t bother looking at any expenditures on recreation or art, just look at the number of people on welfare, food stamps, and unemployment.

Interesting how the places with the most “sin” are the heart of the Bible belt. I guess that bible belt isn’t helping us keep our pants on.

Seems like Nevada is largely untouched
(with Colorado and Maine close seconds). Time to move?
