Dan Wooley’s Story on Today Show

Dan Wooley’s Story on Today Show

POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Compassion

In the days following the earthquake in Haiti I sent out multiple Twitter requests to pray for Dan Wooley who works for Compassion International (the organization that I’ll be going to Kenya with in March). Dan traveled to Haiti on Sunday, January 10 with a contractor, on assignment for Compassion’s Child Survival Program. The team were filming in Port-au-Prince before returning to Hotel Montana just before the earthquake struck. I had just spoken with Dan on Friday before he left so when I heard that he was among the missing it was oddly surreal.

As you may have already heard if you follow me on Twitter, Dan was miraculously rescued from the rubble of the Hotel Montana on Friday (video of him being rescued). He appeared on the Today Show this morning to tell his story. It’s especially heart-wrenching 3:00 minutes in when Dan reads one of the letters he wrote to his children in his journal in case he died.

Thank God that Dan was rescued safely. Please continue to pray for everyone else who is still over there and for all the families who haven’t heard from their loved ones yet.

Yes, I worked with Dan a little too, and also visited Haiti in 2002 and stayed in the same hotel. Very surreal. I’m so glad we have our office staff all accounted for an safe. Now to find out about the Directors, Pastors, teachers, accountants, cooks and other workers, not to mention over 65,000 sponsored children in Haiti. It will be a monumental task to track them all down, but thankfully God has kept these office staff alive and will equip them for the job. I’m also praying for LDP students that will be stepping up to places of leadership in a new Haiti…

You’re right David; this truly seems like a miracle and it’s remarkable that Dan survived. We can only hope for the same outcome for others affected by the tragedy. After hearing of Dan’s story, I strongly believe that those who put themselves in huge danger for the benefit of others should be rewarded and recognised to a much greater extent than is currently the case. Let us not forget that such jobs are generally not particularly well paid, despite the significant sacrifices that they entail. It’s admirable that people are willing to put themselves on the line in this way at all. Saying this, I can’t imagine a job that brings a greater sense of satisfaction; the work undertaken is so vital to sustain the lives of many and must come with a huge sense of achievement.

I totally agree with you Ian when you say “I can’t imagine a job that brings a greater sense of satisfaction”.

It really brings a tear to the eye to think of the suffering Of the Haiti people. It warms my heart to think that there are good people like Dan in this world who are willing to sacrifice so much.

How Dan survived is not really a miracle… God always saves those who go out of their way to help others. A brilliant story about a brilliant personality.

Well, I believe that Dan was given a second life because he deserves one. He has been a good man and he has been rewarded for the kindness he showed. I also believe that maybe it was not his time to die just yet.
