Where Will Happiness Strike Next?
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Creativity, Videos
Coca Cola recently launched a brilliant video that immediately went viral racking up over 1 million views since its launch on January 12, 2010 (ht to Curtis for the link).
A specially rigged Coca Cola vending machine was set up overnight in Marilac Hall at St John’s University in Queens, with five hidden cameras ready to catch the action. The next day students were surprised by a vending machine that handed out (literally in some cases) pizza, flowers, extra Coke, balloon animals and a a six-foot sub. The video ends with the question, “Where will happiness strike next?”
Coca-Cola “Happiness Machine”
Ok, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this video! It’s so creative. I don’t know how or where but I’m going to do something like this here in Indianapolis.
What do you think of the “Happiness Machine” video? If I were a betting man I’d lay down money that you’re already emailing it to someone…am i right?

BRILLIANT!
I believe the best word to describe what people experienced here was JOY! They got way more than their mundane expectations.
Forward it? No, I BLOGGED it! So much to learn from that brilliant marketing/PR campaign.

Well, Brad, I’m glad you’re not a betting man
)
To be honest, while it’s a neat experiment, there are two things that I struggle with.
Right at the beginning, the lady puts in money for a Coke, and several come out. Is taking the extra ones not purchased setting a good example? Even if it was rigged to do this as part of the experiment, she did not know this. The message it sends made me uncomfortable right off the bat.
Secondly, I love the acts of kindness extended to the students, but I have issues with the marketing / catch phrase. I don’t think vending machines are the true source of happiness. In this materialistic society, this type of message just adds to the noise.
Then again, perhaps I’m missing the point entirely — there IS joy in giving
) I hope this leads people to be more intentional in giving to others. Random acts of kindness should become less random, and more commonplace!
Thank you for sharing!

I think JD is over-analyzing it a little too much! Maybe if you told me what any of the people who got more than 1 Coke should do with the excess, maybe I would agree. These are poor college kids, so I think it’s great that they are sharing the wealth. I didn’t see anyone with a shopping bag taking them all for themselves. And they were all smiling! And working together.
But, I didn’t see a knife to help cut up the sub sandwich…..

Sounds kind of like the “fun theory” experiments that Volkswagon set up http://www.thefuntheory.com/
Except perhaps being more blatantly commercial (not directly obvious that Volkswagon is behind it…). Fun though!

If Apple company didn’t help to make personal computers as well as Local cafe did not make coffee, how come acquired they become thus flourishing? The journey to achieve the most innovative and many attractive products, despite the fact that envigorating, can be a somewhat packed area. If possible, Apple company as well as Local cafe created their particular market.
