I Want That Job!

I Want That Job!

No matter how content we may be at our current job we’re all guilty of peering over the fence and wondering if the grass really is greener on the other side.

Brian Kurth, a former business executive from Oregon, came up with an idea that allows everyday joes to “test-drive” their dream job. His company, Vocation Vacations, connects curious people with mentors who have the dream jobs they’ve only, well, dreamed about pursuing.

Here are a few of the most-popular “Vocation Vacations”…

Actor

Who hasn’t dreamed of being a Matt Damon or Angelina Jolie — the lights, the fans, the paparatzi. Granted, we may not have the Brad Pitt looks to pull it off but that’s why they call it a “dream job” right? Then again, if Arnold Schwarzenegger could do it…

Bed & Breakfast Owner

There’s something relaxing about staying at a unique little Bed & Breakfast tucked away somewhere. But maybe you wish you were the one doing the hosting and entertaining in your own little establishment.

Brewmaster

Do you consider yourself a connoisseur of good craft or micro-brewery beers? Ever dream of making it yourself? The job of Brewmaster has consistently ranked among the top 10 dream jobs in surveys. It’s not hard to imagine why a lot of people dream of brewing their own beer for a living.

Chocolatier

Chocolate lover? Ever dreamed of making your living from making it? While it may sound like a dream job to some, I wonder how tough it would be to be surrounded by chocolate all day. Talk about temptation…

Sports Commentator

These guys do what millions of American’s do already: they watch sports and talk about. The only difference is that they get paid to do it. I know, no one ever said life was fair.

Roller Coaster Designer

Ever play Roller Coaster Tycoon and wish you could do that for real? There aren’t many roller coaster designers (there are about 100 roller coaster design companies in the US) but man what a job that would be!

If you got a 6-month vacation and could do anything…what would your Dream Job be?

I most consistently peer over the shoulders of pastors with huge charisma and large churches. But outside of preaching, I’m dreaming of being a high school history teacher. It’s kind of sad I’m looking forward to a teacher’s salary. But brewmaster sounds good too. Less stressful then teaching anyway.

I want to be a chef/restauranteur when I grow up. My first restaurant will be called the two wolves cafe. It will have two chalkboard-style menus…one good (filled with organic, healthy options) and one that is evil (comfort foods filled with butter). It shall be glorious.

I have several. I would love to be (have the knowledge to be since I am not good enough to do) a coach for a professional cycling team in Europe (can you say TeamRadioShack?). I would like to be someone with the knowledge of frontier living and live in Alaska or some mountain range and be a guide.

I’d be a speaker, not necessarily to millions of people but to the influential people. Speaking in oh-so-cool exotic places wouldn’t hurt either. :>)

Anyone that knows me knows I’d want to be a stunt-driver. More recently, I’ve been thinking that it’d be cool to be an F1 driver too!

    Hi Brad,

Thanks for blogging about VocationVacaitons! Got notice via good ol’ Google News Alert.

Yes, we offer career mentorship experiences across 180 different vocation types (including all of the above except Roller Coaster Designer – maybe some day) across 30 states. Here’s the complete list:

    Oh I have a few..

First and foremost, I would LOVE to be an EVENT COORDINATOOR!!! Oh how I love to throw parties. It’s so rewarding in so many ways!! I sort of had that chance for a few months, but nothing stuck… (someday)

Also, I would love to own a Bed & Breakfast. I find it interesting that so many people feel the same way. Being in the hotel business for so long, you can’t help but wonder if you could pull it off yourself with a little chic house and white picket fence.

If I had a six month vacation to do whatever I wanted…I’d be a writer and speaker. I know it’s not glamorous like an actor or sports commentator but it’s my dream to be a full-time writer.
