What I’m Rocking Out To
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Music
We haven’t talked music here in a while. Here’s a few of the albums that I’ve been enjoying on my iPod recently.

Carlos Whittaker EP
My boy Carlos (better know in the blogging world as Ragamuffin Soul or @loswhit) just dropped the EP from his upcoming worship album. The three songs on the EP only make you look forward that much more to the full-length album. While all the songs are great I’d have to say “We Will Worship You” is my fav on the EP.
It’s obvious a lot more than quality songwriting and studio time went into this album. Carlos’ passion for engaging, heart-felt worship really shines through on each song.
Pick up this EP on iTunes and let me know what you think.

Contra – Vampire Weekend
I kept hearing people talk about Vampire Weekend, and especially their new album Contra, so I decided to pick it up. After listening the first time through I realized what all the talk was about. I totally missed the bus on these guys.
Their style of music (or choice of lyrics on some songs) may not appeal to everyone but I’m a sucker for that off-the-wall, unique sound that defies genres.
Standouts on the album include California English and Horchata (after hearing that song you’ll be humming it all day)

November EP – Azure Ray
This EP isn’t exactly new (it was released back in 2002) but it’s new to me. I discovered Azure Ray after hearing the song November on one my Pandora stations.
Azure Ray is made of up two very talented singer/songwriters, Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor. The songs on this album are quiet and delicate with beautiful guitar. Most of the songs are rather somber and reflective and are a perfect complement to gray Winter days or quiet dinners.
If you like this EP you’ll also want to check out some of their newer albums such as Hold On Love or New Resolution.

It Is Well – Kutless
This album was an unexpected find for me. I have all of the previous Kutless albums from my Youth Pastor days but haven’t really listened to them much recently. When I saw the title for their new release I decided to check it out since I was curious how a band like Kutless would interpret a hymn like “It Is Well” (beautifully done by the way).
I stumbled instead on what is now one of my new favorite worship albums. They do a great job breathing new life into worship classics like Hungry, God of Wonders and Give Us Clean Hands. They also added a couple songs of their own to the mix that are equally strong.
My favorite though is the single What Faith Can Do (check out the music video here). Powerful lyrics.

Also deserving of an honorable mention is Hope For Haiti Now (great cause, good song selection, great price) and A Chorus of Storytellers by Album Leaf.

Kutless’ album is a big one. I am also listening again to Fee’s Hope Rising. Also big right now is Pillar’s Confessions and Thousand Foot Krutch’s Welcome to the Masquerade. Stryper’s Murder by Pride is also played heavily. Can you sense a pattern in style?

Dude! How is “White Sky” not one of your favorites from Vampire Weekend? It’s the Vampire Weekend-iest of them all!

How can you look at Losiah’s face & not buy his daddy’s EP??? I mean, come on!
I did get that. And the Kutless music a couple of weeks ago. After “What Faith Can Do”, I love “Amazed” and “Taken By Love”.
Also, NEEDTOBREATHE’s “The Outsiders”. There is not a song on there I don’t like.
Although we have 4 more days, I am loving the 4 songs that tobyMac has released ahead of the full release. Wow. “Get Back Up” just speaks to me. No matter what. Get back up. Keep moving forward on this journey. Because God is there to help me through it all. The highs & the lows.

I recently discovered Family Force 5. Sure, it’s probably pretty unseemly for a 50-year-old father of four to be into “Christian crunkcore.” But dang, their over-the-top party tunes are fun to rock out to.
