Safe In Nairobi
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Kenya Trip
We arrived safe and sound in Nairobi around 9 PM, went through customs, picked up our bags and drove to our hotel. The flight over was loooonnng but for the most part uneventful.
On the first leg of the trip (Minneapolis to Amsterdam) I sat next to a documentary filmmaker who was on his way to Munich to pick up a special underwater housing for his video camera. The subject of his documentary? The Loch Ness Monster. He and his team are going to attempt to capture footage of the Loch Ness Monster by spelunking into a cave that it supposedly lives in. Interesting fellow. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The reason he is knows where and how to capture footage of the Loch Ness Monster? His psychic told him.

Sunrise at the Amsterdam Airport
We had a short layover in Amsterdam. Cultural boundaries are definitely different here. I was making use of the restroom at the airport and half-noticed a custodian cleaning in the bathroom. It was only as I was walking out that I realized it was a lady custodian who was in there while I was going to the bathroom. I don’t know about you but I prefer bathroom visits to not be a co-ed activity.
After we arrived in Nairobi a free Wi-Fi signal was found so the iPhones flew out to check emails and update Twitter statuses.

Tomorrow we start right off by visiting a Compassion project first thing in the morning. If you haven’t already grab one of my trip banners for your blog or web site to help spread the word.
More to come soon. Thanks for reading!

I am laughing hard right now over the film maker. Here is the reason.
I fly a lot. I am not one that is big on airplane chit chat especially if I have tons of work. (Hard for some to believe because I would chit chat just about every other time).
For years, I played this game. If someone on a plane asked me what I did, I told them something completely different..every time.
Lawyer, teacher, retired(that always got weird looks), banker (not as popular now) etc. Something I knew just enough about if I was asked other questions I could answer.
But to finish this story without an essay, I would have paid great money to have had the film maker story with Nessy. Crazy thing is that it is probably true, but I would have totally used it.

I know just what Alece means. We actually share South Africa, she and I. Yea, we totally cut it down the center. And anytime you hear of anyone who’s in the vicinity a part of your heart starts to flutter and you immediately think hot, sweat running down between your shoulder blades sun, red dirt, dust roads, and open pick ups with folks crammed in back. You think veld fires and the smell of cooking in the open. You think of sunsets that burn up the sky like no where else and faces that could light up the night they are so full of hope and good humor when they have every reason not to be. You think of purple Jacaranda trees and mealie meal and chickens. You think of mangos and watermelon and giraffes carved out of wood. You think of the very middle of the heart of God when you think of Africa.
Like Alece, I am proud to call it home.
Blessings to you on your trip. I believe you will come back with much more than you took. Africa’s funny like that.

I love the story from your Amsterdam-experience…
I live in the Netherlands. Just wondering how you Americans clean restrooms…? Do you have male custodian for the male rooms or what?
On topic: have a great trip, Brad!

I laughed out loud at your references to a Wi-Fi signal, iPhones, and updating Twitter statuses. When I lived and worked in Kenya (not that long ago, really) those were nonexistant. Oh, my, how life on the mission field has changed!

Cool to see folks from the US go to my homeland. Enjoy the culture. It’s the best in the world. Try the Kenchic fries and rotisserie chicken wrapped in a news paper and a coke. It’s the best food.
