They’re After Me Lucky Charms!
POSTED IN: Blog Posts
I love everything Irish – Irish musicians, Irish movies, Irish Coffee. Ergo, I love St. Patrick’s Day. My Dad was adopted and since we don’t know his actual heritage, I like to think that I have a little Leprechaun in me somewhere up the line.
Speaking of Leprechauns, I found some random facts about the elusive little men in green. These are perfect to pull out for your St. Patty day celebrations (although too much “celebration” at the

- Leprechauns usually take the form of old men who enjoy partaking in mischief.
- They are cobblers or shoemakers by trade and are said to be very rich, having many treasure crocks buried during war-time
- How can you tell how old a Leprechaun is? Tradition says that there is one gold coin in his pot for every year he has lived.
- According to legend, if anyone keeps an eye fixed upon one, he cannot escape, but the moment the eye is withdrawn he vanishes.
- The word which is widely believed to be the root and one of the ones quoted by the Oxford English Dictionary is luchorpán. An alternative derivation for the name and another one quoted by the Oxford English Dictionary, is leath bhrógan, meaning shoe-maker — the leprechaun is known as the fairy shoemaker of Ireland and is often portrayed working on a single shoe.
Since we’re on the subject, I always get a kick out of this story (which has since become a YouTube viral video). In March 2006 there was a reported leprechaun sighting in the Chrighton neighborhood of Mobile, Alabama. The resulting news story became an international story and has since picked up over 13 million hits on YouTube.
I love how the guy about 2 minutes in is so serious in his pursuit of the elusive Leprechaun – camouflage clothes, scent-deflectors and even a heirloom Leprechaun flute to lure the little guy out. Genius strategy.
I may not have seen a Leprechaun yet but I did lay eyes on an adorable little Irish lass this morning…

How do you celebrate St. Patty’s Day? Are you wearing green or do you need a pinch?

Brad, I LOVE St. Patrick’s Day! I hope they’ve found that leprechaun in Mobile…we don’t want him running loose on the streets.
At our house, we decorate for 2 holidays: Christmas and St. Paddy’s Day. Carrie and I are looking forward to going back to Ireland…she would move there permanently!

Curtis – you’re about the closest thing I know to a living Leprechaun. Grow yourself a beard and find yourself a pot of gold and you’re all set.
I agree about Ireland…your pictures make me jealous. Can’t wait to go there myself.

Rugs! Happy St. Pat’s my man. I was just looking back at my old March 17th posts and saw your comment wishing my fam well on this day. Same to you my friend. Your daughter looks too cute. No doubt there’s some of Erin’s (being Ireland’s old name) heritage in your family.

Surprised you didn’t mention great leprechauns of the Bible.
Remember singing “Zacchaeus was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he?” Clearly, this is a reference to Ireland’s height-challenged mascots.
Moses’ staff turning into a serpent? It was a shillelagh, the magical walking stick brandished by every self-respecting leprechaun.
By the by, you’ve had WAY too much green beer if you believe any of this!

What a funny video! Obviously a full camouflage outfit is the way to go when trying to find a leprachaun!
I found your blog via twitter and I have really enjoyed reading. My maiden name is Ruggles, so who knows, maybe we are distantly related.

I had a dream when I was 10 about getting lost in a Leprechaun cave, only to have them push me into a bottomless pit, but not before catching myself on the ledge…to which they took to prying my fingers off one at a time. My father ran into my room to find my dangling from my bunk bed, clawing the sheets, and screaming.
I’m over it now. No really. ch:
