The Olive Theory

The Olive Theory

Sometimes when we’re tired but need to burn 30 minutes before going to bed to make sure we’re not going to bed too early we’ll watch a quick TV show on our laptop in bed (anyone else do this?). Sitcoms work perfect because they’re just the right amount of time so that you’re not staying up too late.

One show we recently started watching was How I Met Your Mother. It’s not Friends or Scrubs funny but it has its moments. I got a laugh out of something they describe as “the olive theory.” It goes like this…

I started thinking of some of the ways Lisa and I complement each other.

I’m a big movie buff while she usually falls asleep midway through. That means if either of our girls want to know anything about a movie they’re going to want to talk to me.

Lisa and I tend to like a lot of the same foods but love to try new things. Whenever we go out to a restaurant we try to order different dishes so we can both try a little of the others food (unless the dish you ordered is just so amazing that you only give them one bite).

I’m a computer geek. Lisa…not so much. So whenever she has a computer problem I’m there to save the day.

Lisa isn’t so great with cars or mechanical things. I’m…well, I guess I’m not either. Dang…we’re kinda screwed there.

So does “the olive theory” apply in your relationship? In what ways do you and your spouse balance each other out?

Based on your experience and mine, I’d say being complementary trumps compatibility every time.

At least it’s worked for us for the last 23 years!

My husband stays up late, I get up early. My kids do both. LOL. We tend to complement each other when one is stressed out about something. The other is usually the one with a cool head. When one of us has a short amount of patience with the kids, the other one is able to jump in and save everyone’s sanity. I tend to fall asleep during movies too, but he can stay up all night watching them. It works out great though. :-)

My wife is an extrovert and I am a introvert. My wife saves money, while I don’t have a problem spending it.

She loves to hate me, while I hate to love her…I kid. :-)

After almost 15 years of marriage, I would say the “Olive Theory” works for us.
