Prostitution Legalized for 2010 World Cup?
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Social Justice
South Africa is in the final stages of preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. While I was in Nairobi a few weeks ago I saw billboards and advertisements throughout the city promoting this huge event.
As has been seen in past events, the expected tourist boom during the FIFA Soccer World Cup will also increase the demand for sex workers. It has been proposed that sex work be decriminalised before the World Cup, increasing the risk of women and young girls being exploited during this time.
This is similar to steps taken during past World Cup events. In Berlin, for example, a 10,000 square feet mega-brothel was built next to the main World Cup venue designed to receive as many as 650 customers at a time. It was estimated that as many as 40,000 women were “imported” from Africa, Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe to meet the expected “market” demands.
With the upcoming World Cup and the millions of people who will be pouring into South Africa, stories of abuse and human trafficking will unfortunately be far too common.
Please pray for justice to come to the millions of people around the world who are in slavery today. Pray for protection for all the vulnerable women and children in South Africa during the World Cup this summer.

I can’t even believe that this stuff is allowed to happen in the modern-day world.
My prayer docket is filling up rather quickly today.

I’m with Lindsay. What makes this even more appalling is the “legal age” in many of these countries is ridiculously low. So while girls under 18 are minors here in the USA, they are not everywhere else. So when governments say the “women” get to “choose” a sex career, we are not getting all of the appalling information.

Unbelievable. Thanks for the info, Brad. I’d like to write on this topic for next week, as human trafficking awareness is a huge thing for me.

Thanks, Brad. This didn’t surprise me, as you might remember form last fall, working with Stop Child Trafficking Now (http://sctnow.org) has really opened my eyes.
Thank you for continuing to shed light on this subject. I read the article you linked.
Jesus, be the shield about these young girls and women. Direct their steps away from the lures and traps set for them…and into hands of safety and hope. Help us. Help us stop the demand for such sin. Help us to reflect your loving-kindness and to do whatever your Holy Spirit impresses, about this. I pray that a huge wave of repentance will flow over this region before the World Cup. And that prostitution as a result, is made illegal forever. Have mercy on us.

thank you for shedding light on this.
all of this is what’s always in the back of my mind when someone casually remarks how great it is for south africa that we’re hosting the world cup. there are a LOT of downsides to it, this whole issue being one of the biggest.

Oh, my goodness. How very sheltered we are in Canada! I had no idea. How can we allow this? How very sad that there is a “market” for this!

thought you’d enjoy seeing this, brad — a young girl doing amazing things to bring awareness to this issue and to rally the body of Christ to pray!
