Superchick Concert Pics
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Music, photos
Last night was a big night for my oldest daughter Chloe. I had the chance to take her to her first real concert. She’s been a fan of Superchick for a couple of years now so when I saw that they were coming through I knew we had to go. Chloe’s friend from school and her dad also joined us. It was an evening of jumping, hand-waving and screaming…mostly by us dads but occasionally by the girls as well.
Here are some photos I took of the concert. I had fun playing with a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens I rented from Roberts. Click on an image to view it full-size or click here to view the set on Flickr.
Superchick put on a great show and sounded every bit as good live as they do on their album. I’ve always been comfortable encouraging my girl’s love of Superchick’s music. Their positive lyrics and upbeat songs are a rare breath of fresh air in the midst of the typical pre-teen/teen pop garbage. Be sure to check out Superchick’s newest release Reinvention, a remix of some of their most popular hits.
I’d love to know what you think of the photos (us creative types are gluttons for praise…even if we have to ask for it)

Photos are beautiful. If I can ever get out of school, I’d like to take some more classes and spend time learning all the ins and outs of my camera. I find photography very moving.

Great photos! Do you have a site to recommend for dummies ike me to learn more about settings, etc.? I have a new Nikon I love, but cannot figure all the stuff out and the “smart book” tells me little that i can understnd. Tired to take photos at my sons play without the flash and they were all blurry!

The photos are absolutely professional looking! What a great way to try out a new lens, too! You captured emotion with each shot. What else? I’m not an expert so I guess I’ll just say they are purdy.

Thanks everyone.
Lisa – There’s a ton of great sites out there about photography but some can be a little overwhelming. The biggest key is getting the best lens you can afford and then learning the best exposure settings for the subject you’re going to shoot. A good overview DVD is the Magic Lantern Guides (such as this one for the D90). I also learned a ton from kenrockwell.com.
Concert photography is a unique type of photography usually requiring “fast” lenses. I learned quite a bit about concert photography at IShootShows.com.
Hope that helps!

Those are some great shots.
I got to meet the band a little over a year ago in Nashville, and got to talk to Tricia for a while. They are extremely nice people and put on an amazing show.
One of my favorite live bands.

I’ll comment on your note about how you did most of the hand waving and screaming…
Me and three other “dads” were at a show recently with our kids. They stood there and clapped…whatever. It was WE DADS who were jumping and throwing it down!
70’s and 80’s babies now how it’s done. Word. ch:

Brad, how close were you to the stage? Pictures look awesome. I am assuming you were real close to the stage. Some of your pics look near the front row, but then there is the on of the guitarist where it looks like you were shooting straight on or maybe even shooting down at him.
Here are some pics taken at a WinterJam concert taken a few years back. I was front row which made it quite east to take some great shots. http://blog.capturethisphoto.com/post/2008/02/Winter-Jam-Concert.aspx
Personally I thought Concert photography was a blast, the range of lighting conditions made it challenging and fun, but with out a digital SLR camera, it would have made it downright painful.
Great pictures, thanks for sharing.

Most of the shots were taken right in front of the stage but, since I had decent seats only 15 rows back I was also able to take some from our seats with the 24-70mm lens. They didn’t do a whole lot with the lights so I wasn’t able to capture as many dramatic shots like you did for the Winter Jam with the fire and sparks (nice pics btw).

@Weston,
I had won the Winter Jam Super Fan from local radio station, front row, center seats, back stage pass. I was able to step right up to the stage and take pictures, right next side of the tour photographer. Quite nice.
