Monday Mixtape: Amazing Covers
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Monday Mixtape, Music
This week’s Monday Mixtape (check out previous Monday Mixtapes here) features some of my favorite covers of popular songs by a wide range of artists. There’s always something fun about discovering an artist’s take on a song that is totally different than the original. Sometimes waaaay different. Take Diane Birch’s slow, soulful rendition of the one-hit-wonder dance song What Is Love (yes, the same What Is Love from the popular SNL skit). Who knew that song could sound so beautiful when slowed down and played against the backdrop of a vintage Rhodes?
So here’s my pick of amazing covers for this week’s Monday Mixtape:

There are so many great covers in this list. All of them are strong in their own right…The Man In Black’s cover of Hurt by NineInchNails (sends a shiver down my spine), Tori Amos’ haunting version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, or Jem’s peaceful cover of Coldplay’s Yellow that is an absolute must-have for any romantic playlist (just sayin). Also be sure to check out the YouTube video of Pomplamoose’s Single Ladies (featured in a post last year) that went viral and launched their online popularity.

Brad, I agree, all of these are awesome, although I’m super disappointed you don’t have any GLEE on this list.
Also, have you checked out Derek Webb’s Democracy, Vol. 1? He’s got a phenomenal cover of The Times They Are A-Changin’ (Dylan). You have to pay $6 to subscribe all year, and you get a new song each month. So far, he’s covered “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” (Gnarls Barkley), “Fix You” (Coldplay), and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (Beatles), along with the abovementioned tune.

Ha ha, there’s a ton of great covers out there. That’s why this is only part 1…more great covers coming soon and there just might be some GLEE in there.

The new Stryper release due in Fall of this year will be all covers. They will be including a Van Halen song, Kansas, Judas Priest (Breaking the Law), and others. Ought to be interesting if you like covers and rock music. (I do).

I remember seeing Johnny Cash’s video for Hurt. It melted my psyche into a puddle of existential nothingness.
(Dang, where did that come from?)
Brad, please use your vaulted status in the realm of the blogosphere to push for a cover of Leonard Nimoy’s “Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.” You’ll find this exquisite treasure here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC73PHdQX04
Suggested artist to handle the cover? I’m thinking either Lady Gaga or Sandi Patti.

Great list, Brad! If love music covers, check out the podcast “Coverville.” Each week, the host takes an artists (U2 is this week) and features their songs covered by other artists. Every now and then, you’ll stumble upon an artist whose other work you’d love to explore.
Great post!
