Behind The Scenes on the Hummingbird Documentary
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Technology, Videos
PBS recently filmed a documentary on hummingbirds (which you can watch in its entirety on PBS.com). To capture these incredibly fast little birds the filmmakers shot on Phantom High Speed Digital Cameras (I want one) capturing up to 500 full HD frames a second!
Being a sucker for nature documentaries and the film-making that goes into it, I was fascinated by this behind-the-scenes video where Filmmaker Ann Prum describes the breakthrough science and latest technologies that allowed her and the crew to capture these amazing shots (check out that cool Borescope lens they use at the 1:45 mark).
Am I the only one who likes watching this kind of stuff? That is just too cool.

Thanks for sharing this. I have to be in a certain mood for nature documentaries, but I love hummingbirds. My dad puts several feeders out and has tons of hummingbirds. I’m going to send him the link. He’ll love watching it. I recently took some photos of them for him. http://www.ordinarilyextraordinary.com/2010/07/my-daddys-hummingbirds.html

Very cool! Nice pictures. Were there really FOUR hummingbirds at your dad’s feeder at one time?? That’s amazing!

How timely. I was at my mom’s house last night for dinner. She has a hummingbird feeder hanging from her back porch. We had a blast watching 3 hummingbirds flitting in and out and chasing each other away from the feeder.
I couldn’t get over how tiny they are…so precious.

Love stuff like this, man. Discovery has a new one they’re showing soon titled, “The Speed of Life” (I think that’s what it is) that looks amazing.

.) I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
