The Point of INCEPTION

The Point of INCEPTION

By now most of us have been to the theaters to see the summer blockbuster that has completely confused America and wasted thousands of hours in mind-numbing conversation around the water cooler. I’m talking of course about INCEPTION.

If for some reason you haven’t seen the movie yet then I should point out what should be obvious by now: SPOILER ALERTS BELOW.

So for everyone who has seen the movie (or for those of you who haven’t but are just nosey and want to keep reading anyway), were you as sucked into that story as I was? I didn’t know whether to stand up and clap at the end or throw my popcorn at the movie screen. Instead I just said, “Whoa” and then realized how much I sounded like Neo from the Matrix.

Of course, a movie as complex and popular as Inception simply begged for designers to jump in with stylish info-graphics analyzing the many intricate levels of the movie. Here’s a few of the more popular ones I’ve seen floating around the Internet.

There, everything make sense now? :-)

Probably my favorite explanation of the movie was this hilarious video from CollegeHumor:

“Sorry, my bad. Sometimes my thoughts of my dead wife manifest themselves as trains.”
“So everyone has weird neurosis but for some reason yours can disrupt other peoples dreams?”
“Just this once…maybe another time.”

lol…ahh, what is it about our strange fascination with being confused?

So, here’s the million dollar question…

Loved the pictures you used to explain it all without it being too confusing for people.

I saw the movie myself, I didnt find it too hard to understand, it also reminded me of the movie Shutter Island a little.

I think the Spintop stopped spinning. =]

SPOILER [Did anyone stay during the credits when you hear something like a Spintop fall?]

    Good Post!

Hmmm, no I didn’t hear that in the credits. I’ll have to pay attention when I rent it on Blu-Ray.

I just forwarded this to everyone I know who’s seen the movie hoping to shed some light. Personally, I love it. But I was also a huge fan of LOST, so I think I just like being confused.

Oooh! I’ll have to see it again, too. Totally missed to the sound of the spintop. Although I am still part of the “he’s still in a dream” group.

im sorry to say but cobb is in limbo… the main reason i believe this is because i remembered when cobb first put ariadne under they were just randomly sitting on a corner cafe then he asked how she got there… what i mean is when cobb finally woke up everyone was sitting there it was to perfect especially when saito just picked up the phone and started to make the call but the give away was how the guy that stamped his passport said “welcome home”

I’ve only watched it once, and found those diagrams helpful, thank you. But I find the question regarding whether or not he is still dreaming meaningless. I found the point of the movie to be that our thoughts, or more importantly, our feelings and emotions, which lie in our subconcious are real, in that they effect us and those around us. For whatever reason, Fisher had his subconcious invaded, resulting in a thought that his father did truly love him. Cobb required the help of others to return “home”. And the projected Mal was there along the way as sort of a reminder that whatever physical environments we go through in life, it may just be our feelings that matter most.

At the end of the movie, it’s pretty clear that the top was going to fall. The best interpretation of the movie is that the entire movie up until Cobb opens his eyes on the plane is a dream. When Cobb opens his eyes on the plane he is in reality. Everything up until that point is one huge crazy dream/nightmare he had while he was on the flight. Boom. There you go. All of the talk of limbo, dreams within dreams, dream machines, extraction, inception are all part of his dream. Remember, “when you are asleep the mind can do almost anything.” This movie is in large part a movie about the making of movies. The architects are screenwriters, directors, etc. Movies can be whatever you make them. They can be reenactments of historical events or elaborate fictional universes. This is what Cobb is talking about when he approaches his father (Michael Caine) in Paris, explaining to him that he knows a way to remove the charges that he killed his wife (who is not actually his wife in real life – remember he is dreaming the entire time). His father says “design it yourself.” He needs an architect to help him (Ariadne). He says “you know what I am offering. It’s not just money, but the chance to build things that couldn’t exist in the real world” (e.g. cathedrals, cities of gold, smurfs, leprechauns, manifold fantasy lands, and on and on). This is what Hollywood and the world of acting are. The dreamers are the actors. Again, because this needs to be reiterated…The entire movie is a dream, and it’s mostly about Cobb and not Fischer. The movie is also about psychology and dreaming. All people dream. You can get into formal Freudian terminology and discussions of the ego, superego, id, etc. The subconscious mind can be VERY powerful. Our subconscious mind impacts/influences our self-image, aspirations, and day-to-day actions and behavior. Memory is also a big part of it. Although human beings have free will (I guess even this can be disputed), nobody is ever fully in control of their own lives. Bad things happen to people that they have no control over, and would have preferred not to have happened. GUILT is a huge theme here as well and goes hand-in-hand with memory. People often carry unreasonable resentments with them. Resentments that hold them back from moving on in their lives, and prevent them from working toward achieving their goals. And on and on and on. Inception is about psychology, dreaming, and the art of filmmaking. As far as the plot of inception is concerned (Saito’s desire to have Fischer dissolve his father’s company – something he would never do without inception), it is highly entertaining and intricate in terms of the different levels, settings, projections within the dreams etc. However, it is secondary to the primary subject matter. Psychology, Dreams, and Movies. Apparently, Christopher Nolan has stated that there are parts throughout the movie in which the characters are in reality (the visit to Paris is one part in which Cobb is probably in reality. It could be a memory of an actual conversation he had with his father or he could just be dreaming it up). The point is that IT DOESN’T MATTER whether he is dreaming or in reality. Again, the best interpretation is that the entire thing is a dream. Remember, “in a dream the mind can do almost anything.” Dreams involve memories; people you know; people you want to meet; people that inspire you; people you want to avoid; people you find terrifying; people you find obnoxious; and on and on and on. This is a fantastic movie. Hopefully I have provided some helpful input here.

Inception was truly one of the best movies last summer and I was fortunate to see it in the theatres. Now that it’s out on DVD I should watch it again.

DiCaprio picks great movies almost all the time. Inception was no exception.

Very nice charts you created to explain the movie further.

Generally I find alternative concsiousness movies lame, but inception managed to do it well, so well that I actually enjoyed it a great day.

I thought the movie would end as soon as the kids turned around, so we would never see their faces. But the face that he sees their faces makes me a believer that he’s in reality.
