The History of Rap with Justin & Jimmy
POSTED IN: Blog Posts, Culture, Videos
Justin Timberlake guested on Fallon’s late-night talk show on Wednesday, and eventually the conversation turned to their mutual love of hip-hop.
And then, it was on.
Accompanied by Fallon’s house band The Roots, Fallon and Timberlake took to the stage and ran through a virtual history of hip-hop, starting with the Sugar Hill Gang classic “Rapper’s Delight” before touching on The Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg and Eminem, among other rap luminaries.
Check out Jimmy and Justin getting their rap on in the video below.
Gotta love the combined talent of Jimmy & Justin. It’s no wonder this video has gone viral overnight.
There were a lot of different eras and styles of rap represented in that video…Which era of rap did you grow up in? Which type of rap/hip-hop (if any) do you throw on the boombox now?

Rap? Well, since I was a good little A/G boy, the only rap I listened to was DC Talk, and T-bone. So, yeah…

So boss and rad. It really had me up on porch. Wanted to jump on the stage to skip along with them.
Could not remember the name
All the raps were not the same
Many sang for great fame
I’m the doin’ the snuggles
Oh yeah, the snuggles

I grew up listening to all the ‘safe’ stuff like DC Talk, and then in high school and college I ‘graduated’ to all the popular stuff, which, at the time, was mostly from the “Bad Boy” record label (Puff Daddy, Notorious BIG, etc).
Lately, I LOVE most of the stuff coming out of Reach Records (Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii). The music sounds great, but even better than the sound: it has fantastic Gospel Truth in it.

I remember watching that episode on Jimmy Fallon’s late night show. Justin Timberlake was a great guest for him to have. I found it really entertaining when they got up on the stage.

For me the golden era of rap has to be between 1989-95. This is the age that saw the introduction of sampling and more recognizable modern lyrical techniques.
I’m afraid the current “bling era” of rap does little for me. It has just become too mainstream and seems to be leaving its roots far behind.
